Valiquette has been revelation on the show. I find Kipper and Bourne, on their own to be borderline insufferable, but Valiquette may be the most insightful hockey mind I’ve heard on the radio. He's great at breaking down goalies.
Add in Mackee and the show is brutal. Valiquette is great. He broke down Sammy last year and even he said Woll was the better goalie. Why the Leafs started Sammy last year in the playoffs is beyond my pay grade.Valiquette has been revelation on the show. It's pretty obvious they weren't comfortable with the fact that he was out 2.5 months with a high ankle sprain and played 25 games. I don't agree with the decision but you can see why, esp. seeing as he ultimately got injured again anyway.Add in Mackee and the show is brutal. Valiquette is great. No I don't see because the stats didn't back it up. Another guy that might know goalies, Weekes said the Leafs needed to play Woll more to get him back in game shape after he came back from injury. They didn't do that. Weekes was another guy that said Woll is the guy they need to go with. Ullmark was another guy. According to Valiquette, Sammy was one of the worst goalies in the league last season. Leafs have access to all those stats but chose to ignore them. It's pretty obvious they weren't comfortable with the fact that he was out 2.5 months with a high ankle sprain and played 25 games. The leafs had some of their best defensive years under Dubas and clearly he tried to upgrade the defence every year. To call those non nhl calibre defences is ridiculous.Who would have thought that having a NHL caliber defense core would make a difference... not Dubas.
McCabe, Muzzin, Gio, Brodie were all brought in by Dubas.Who would have thought that having a NHL caliber defense core would make a difference... not Dubas.
Yup. Bringing in quality defence wasn't the issue with Dubas. Bringing in a quality goalie, however...The leafs had some of their best defensive years under Dubas and clearly he tried to upgrade the defence every year. To call those non nhl calibre defences is ridiculous.
Freddie was a quality starter, except he had a tendency for a weak goal at the worst time. Campbell was very good, until he wasn't...lol. Sammy had a very good first year but was plagued with the softie at the wrong time especially in the playoffs. I don't know why Tre re-signed him last season. He did help draft Hildeby, Akhtyamov and Peksa so other then Stolarz, Dubas has his hands all over our goaltending including Woll who he signed to his last 2 contracts for less then his ELC.Yup. I would argue that Campbell was ‘meh’ at best - if anything, the team played a strong defensive game in front of him. He never really stole a game and would give up just terrible goals throughout the game.Freddie was a quality starter, except he had a tendency for a weak goal at the worst time. He inherited Andersen - LouLam was the GM that brought him in. The pro-level goalies Dubas brought in were all inconsistent (at best) and he made some really critical mistakes in terms of guys he let go (like losing McBackup and Pickard to keep Sparks). As for the drafted guys, he was GM while many of them were chosen, sure, but, it's typically the head of scouting that makes the call for picks outside the 1st round - so, partial credit for that, while also pointing out that these goalies are all still largely unknowns at the NHL level.Freddie was a quality starter, except he had a tendency for a weak goal at the worst time. Campbell had a stretch of 15 or so games in 21/22 where he was really good, but, outside of a few other short stretches, he was definitely not great - and once things went downhill with him, they really went downhill fast.I would argue that Campbell was ‘meh’ at best - if anything, the team played a strong defensive game in front of him. I never felt, while watching a Campbell game, that he was rock solid back there.
I agree with Cabber24. The issue.... that still plagues this franchise, is that Dubas shoved over 50% of the cap is in just 4 forwards. Contracts could have been negotiated better and architecture could have been more balanced.....but instead the roster was left small amounts of money for the rest of the forwards, and to build out the defense and the crease. The winners like the Avs, Lightening, Panthers, GK were considerably more balanced.Who would have thought that having a NHL caliber defense core would make a difference... not Dubas.
My point about Freddie is they had a goalie so there was no need to bring one in during his time. The Sparks keep would've been done by all 31 other GMs. Campbell was not inconsistent. He was very good for the Leafs but also had the Freddie habit of a bad goal. His numbers were very good for the Leafs overall. I remember people were begging Dubas to sign him in the 21/22 season. He inherited Andersen - LouLam was the GM that brought him in. Talk about a sugarcoating
Why did we add at least 2 defensemen every deadline? The D core was nowhere near good enough during any time Dubas was GM. I would argue team D was decent during that time due to Keefe's coaching and not personnel. The game they play now is much simpler because they can trust their blue line (and goal-tending).The leafs had some of their best defensive years under Dubas and clearly he tried to upgrade the defence every year.
