Fraser to Edmonton

DarrenDreger: Oilers acquire Mark Fraser from Leafs for Cam Abner and Hartikainen.

That's a lot more than I expected to get for Fraser.

EDIT: That's also a type on Dreger's behalf - should be Cam Abney.

Hartikainen intrigues me slightly (very slightly).

@JonathanWillis

Well. That's interesting. Both Abney and Hartikainen were outside the organization's plans.

Interesting that the #Leafs have some time for Hartikainen - he's been good in the KHL and I've wanted to see him get another NHL shot.

EDIT: More..

@coreypronman

Hartikainen is signed in the KHL through 2014-15. Best case scenario is bottom six forward if he ever comes back to NA.

@mirtle

Leafs get Abney, who's in the ECHL, and Hartikainen, who's playing in the KHL. Basically nothing.

I don't know who either of those players are but thank jeebus! Fraser was inevitably going to be waived when Bolland came back anyway. And the team was going to be in a very tight cap situation when that happened too. Getting Fraser's entire cap off the books gives them some breathing room.

Edmonton's so bad right now from top to bottom. Can we make all our trades with them? Surely they could use McLaren, right?

Have seen Hartikainen play a few times.  He is kind of like Kuli but I think his skating is a little off.  He plays like the new breed of Finn, likes to hit and doesn't mind getting his nose dirty.  I think he will make the Leafs if he wants to come back???

Yeah. He put up decent AHL numbers and is putting up decent KHL numbers this season. He has decent size, too. Abney's just a organizational depth guy, but Hartikainen could be a diamond in the rough. I don't expect much to come of him, but, definitely an intriguing prospect.

I think I saw him play against Phoenix last year?  If it is the same guy he was impressive. The finn or russian or whatever he is

The more I read of it, it's pretty much nothing (as Mirtle says).

Honestly, if either of them become an NHL player, this is a big win for the Leafs. Heck, just getting rid of the ~$450K remaining from Fraser cap hit is a win. I don't have high hopes for Hartikainen, but, if he decides to come back, we might be surprised.

Here's a write-up an Edmonton blog posted about Hartikainen in the summer: http://www.coppernblue.com/2013/8/8/4600914/11-teemu-hartikainen-top-oilers-prospects-top-25-under-25

edit: the article notes that he's signed in Russia for this season and next.

Yep, that's pretty much it.  Even if they don't play a second for the team, it's still a good move.

EDIT: Regarding the cap:

@JPNikota

The Leafs just made themselves $1.275M on the cap

DarrenDreger: Plan is to leave Hartikainen in Russia. Meanwhile, Leafs are considering Marlies\Orlando as options for Abney.

a draft pick would have been better to ask for.  But it makes sense to trade Fraser since Gleason has made him redundant.

The difference between the likelihood of one of these guys contributing and the likelihood of the draft pick the Leafs maybe could have received resulting in a NHL player is almost certainly nothing,

Abney's a minor league goon. He's in his 3rd professional season and has played in just 18 AHL games. He's also a RFA at the end of the season and likely won't be re-signed. I'm not sure why the Leafs would give him playing time in the AHL when the Marlies have enough forwards as-is.

My guess is they're looking at "if we make this move, then he goes here" type scenarios.

There could always been other deals in the works that might ship out Marlies players in a trade too.
