Free Agent Pursuit Thread(No You-Know-Who)

With the need for RHD, I'm surprised that Demers hasn't signed. Positive possession numbers and 34th in league in EVS p/60 by D last year.

If the Leafs are chasing a defenceman Demers makes 100% more sense. Right-handed and actually good.

DET and NYI both apparently out on Matt Martin. TOR believed to be one of the remaining teams still in the mix.

Why don't we like this guy again?

He might actually be a good 4th liner but without even knowing what he's going to sign for I can already tell you it'll be too much for too long.

On the plus side, it won't be a crippling contract. But it is a little concerning that management feels this is the type of player they need.

I rarely see it as a good strategy to sign established 3rd or 4th liners as UFAs. That's what your farm system should be for, no?

I think the farm should be for first and second liners.  UFA should only be for third and forth liners

It's not an either/or thing. Really good teams produce good players on all 4 lines and add them externally.

Finishing pieces are often added via free agency and trades. A player added as a finishing piece can be from the net on out, and, can be for any line as required.

Kessel is the example of a player added via trade that put Pittsburgh over the top.

JVR-Kadri-Nylander
Michalek-Bozak- Soshnikov
Komarov-Matthews-Marner
Martin-Laich-Greening
Pressbox: Hyman, Lupul

Reilly-Zaitsev
Gardiner-Shultz
Polak-Hunwick
Marincin-Corrado

If Gardiner-Shultz played so well together for Wisconsin then why not reunite them

I'd do it on a decent cap hit and 1-2 year length, just to see...

Shultz and Gardiner were/are legit NHLers(Schultz admittedly a bit of a fringe one). Them playing really well in college together is probably more a reflection of the talent discrepancy there than anything else.

Carrick being the number 9 defenceman seems like a raw deal for him.

He's 22 and is coming off a playoffs where he put up 18 points in 15 games after having a nice debut with the Leafs in the NHL.  He shouldn't have a guaranteed top 6 spot but he should be a lock for the top 7.  Doesn't look like that is going to happen unless they move a couple of defensemen.  It's a shame because both Carrick and Corrado have to pass through waivers.
