Game 20 - Capitals @ Maple Leafs - 7:00Pm ET

Not as fun for Mirtle to tweet the score when it's the Leafs up big.  Every time the other team gets up by a few on the Leafs it becomes like real-time updates, but not tonight.

Leafs were out shot 33-13 in the final 40 minutes - although a great deal of that was obviously them sitting on a lead.

Still he finds a way.

He said he was 'off' tonight, so I'll give him a break on tonight.  I enjoy his stuff.

Uh, I feel silly saying this about a first place team, but could we see Boudreau canned after this one?

After a 7-0-0 start, they are 10-6-1.

Or is that completely stupid?

Remember '94? Leafs started 10-0 then went about .500 the rest of the season. So I don't think those numbers merit a firing.

I only got to watch the first 30 min so I saw up to 4-1 but I was really pleased with the effort.  I saw a big difference right away- they won a lot of loose pucks, they generated several chances and they were outworking the caps at every turn.  I see they took their foot off the gas a bit even with the goals but that's to be expected.

I'll watch the game again on CBC replay... Gotta enjoy these :)

Fantastic! Offense in high gear, Gus with 40 saves... nice win! :)

A big boost of a win for both Guaravvson and the Leafs.  Hopefully, the Monster keeps 'tending solidly, and the Leafs keep on playing well.  Good job, guys!  :)

Fantastic game by Gustavsson and Lupul.

I really think Gus should get the start today. After a game like that, how can you not?

Kessel and Lupul are 1 and 3 in NHL scoring right now.

Nah, lock him up for ten days, treat him like garbage and then bust him loose on special occasions. - Seems to work.  ;)

so how 'bout putting Gus back in tomorrow?

Gus does well when the expectations are low, like last night. Put him in tonight expecting a repeat of last night and you'll end up disappointed.

Maybe Gus is going to try to prove something -- the opposite of what you say, Fanatic.  You may be correct, but I hope it'll be a win-win situation for the Goose and his teammates.  :)

That was unexpected.  After the first goal he settled in and actually made some really good saves.  I was impressed by his play last night.  Leafs dominated the Caps like I never thought possible.

Mike Knuble said. ?You?re facing a team that you look at the lineup and they?re injured and calling guys up in the morning from down in the minor league team, and they came out and played an unbelievable game and beat us in every facet of the game. Every statistical category ? it wasn?t even barely 51 percent to 49 ? it was substantial difference in every which way on the ice. You?ve got to give them credit for coming out and really kicking the crap out of us.?
...
Said Dennis Wideman: ?I think guys are working; we?re just not working in the right direction, not working together ?.We got a guy going one way and we pass it the other way. I don?t know; we?ve got to put it behind us and move on really fast here because we?ve got some games coming up and we?ve got to stop this now. I don?t know.?

Coach Bruce Boudreau was asked if he agreed with the players? assessment that there was a lack of cohesiveness within the team as a whole.

?I think when you talk about lack of cohesion, it means when you?re losing, guys try to do things individually,? Boudreau said. ?And when you do things individually, things don?t work. It has nothing to do with them not wanting to succeed. I think they played hard right to the end. They couldn?t buy a goal at the end. That gets really frustrating after a while and then you try to do things individually and you cheat when you?re down goals.?

I think Gus was a little unlucky on the goal that deflected twice before it went in. I thought he was lucky where Liles or Franson saved one that had got past him and in a couple of other situations. Overall, the Caps tried hard, pelted him with 40+ shots and he stood tall. Good for him.

Given the injuries, it was a result I never would have predicted.

Since we've dissected the stats when they've played poorly, I'll throw some out at the 1/4 mark of the season after they've played well to even things up a little:
Leafs Offence: tied for 6th
Leafs PP: 7th
Leafs Defence: 27th (up from as low as 29th)
Leafs PK: 27th (up from 30th)

Overall, they're better offensively and weaker defensively than I expected at the start of the season. But I didn't anticipate them to play as many games without Reimer.

I think, on balance, his unlucky has so far outweighed his lucky, so I feel he deserved a game where more went his way than against him.
