Game 25: Bruins @ Leafs 7:00PM TSN

Wilson blamed Gus?

Wilson was told by a reporter that Gustavsson described a couple goals as stoppable and was asked if he agreed.

Wilson replied by saying something like "maybe, but it happens", cited Tim Thomas letting in the Frattin goal.

It didn't sound like blaming him at all to me.

No, he did say he felt Gus could have had one or two of the goals though.  Gustavsson himself did say that he felt one or two goals, while weren't bad goals, could have been saved.

Both are right.

Some quotes and comments from last nght's game...

Ron Wilson
".... they seem to have our number.  I was actually pleased with the way we played.  Unfortunately they got the power plays and we got one and a half.  I thought we worked hard enough to draw a few more penalties, but we didn't get them."

"We had our opportunites and clear scoring chances where we misfired or they happened to get a leg on the puck, but overall I was happy with the way we played...if we keep playing like that we'll eventually beat these guys."

Dion Phaneuf
"I thught we deserved a better outcome... but, I think the way the score ended up didn't reflect how we plywd."

Luke Schenn
"My bad" (on the giveaway Schenn said afterwards... all in all, we hung in there and had some good quality chances, but (Boston goalie) Tim Thomas was great tonight."

You're probably right, that leap isn't fair to make for lasts night game.  But in the grand scheme of things I don't find it that far-fetched.  Out of 42 qualifying goalies Gus ranks 35th in save percentage, which is a better stat for goalies and ranks 37th in GAA.  Now I am not looking for Gus to be overly meretricious, or any of our goalies, but I believe they need to do a better job.

"Meretricious"?  You don't want our goalies to be overly showy in a vulgar way?*  Or did you mean "meritorious"?

* BTW I am not trying to be pedantic -- you could use "meretricious" in describing a goalie.  Anybody remember that playoff game (COL-DET?) where Patrick Roy flashed the leather on a pretty routine shot, only to bobble it into the net?  That was meretricious.

Patrick Roy was a hooker? Things I didn't know...

But the leap from that to "...so Gus played poorly" doesn't follow. Gus faced a lot of shots. Boston executed well. They caught some bad breaks as with the Schenn giveaway. All of those things go into the goals that the team gave up in addition to Gus' play. That's why a lot of people can see past raw GA.

The games he's played against the Bruins really skew his numbers to look a lot worse than they are.

In the games since his first action against Boston up to last night's, he had very Reimer-like numbers.

In the games since his first action against Boston up to last night's, he had very Reimer-like numbers.

Three appearances against Boston (2 starts and one relief appearance) he faced 88 shots and gave up 13 goals.  - 5.41 GAA 0.852 SV%

Rest of his appearances (11 starts) -  2.71 GAA 0.911 SV%

You can't ignore the Boston games, but in general the Boston games have beaten up his numbers pretty bad.  The Leafs didn't show up in the first two matchups and the 3rd gave Boston way too many good scoring chances.  I'd like his numbers to be better too, but I'm not going to worry too much in a 14 game sample size.

I was surprised to hear Lyndon Byers (ex-NHLer and Boston radio guy now) this morning on 590 call Wednesday's Bruins-Leafs game one of the best games he's ever watched.  Ever!

Don't know about that one, but it wasn't a bad game to watch.  Both teams played relatively well.  Some good goals were scored.  Some really nice saves were made and it was close for the majority of the game where either team could have won.  It was a good game, but I'm not sure how it ranks much more than "good but completely forgettable"

I thought that while it was close (the first two periods), it was some very entertaining hockey. Even the play-by-play guys were saying how nice it was to watch two of the best teams in the East going at it.

I agree it was a very entertaining game, depite the Toronto outcome for the home crowd.  To be honest, it kind of made me happy that not only did the Leafs put up a good effort in the game, but their play also earned such genuine respect from a Boston observer who's seen some fine games in the last year alone.

I forgot to make the thread this morning before taking the girls skating. I had it all ready and saved in a text doc on my laptop. I don't have the resources on my iPhone to make a good game day thread. :(

Someone else needs to take this one.

Wow.  That is completely awesome. I have never used twitter before.  I am tempted to sign up.

When Ron is talking to the media, he so often sounds like a complete jerk, but then I hear this kind of thing and you think there must be a pretty amusing guy in there.
