General Leafs Rumour Updates...

A Leafs Rumours page I follow on Facebook says the Leafs offered Kadri & the 24th pick to Carolina for Semin & the 5th pick.  I have no idea where they got it from, they may have pulled it out of thin air.

I think this is something Eklund cooked up a little bit ago and the people started playing the telephone game with it. Recently Dean "Babcock has re-sign with Detroit" Blundell put out his version of it.
Ah, OK thanks.  I figured it sounded too good to be true.

Leafs contacted Cody Franson during Interview Period

From the Boston Globe:

They will bid for Jimmy Vesey if the Harvard senior declines to sign with Nashville and becomes a free agent in August.

In that way, losing the five remaining years on Phaneuf?s contract gives them breathing room in the future. The Leafs, who won?t be chasing a playoff spot next season, can wait until 2017 to let Milan Michalek and Colin Greening walk, thereby freeing up the $6.65 million due to the ex-Senators. They can buy out Jared Cowen after this season and receive a cap credit.

For what it's worth, Steve Simmons is reporting the Lupul has told friends that he believes he's played his last game in a Leafs' uniform.

Nope, Simmons bugged Lupul's house ;)

I would highly doubt Lupul is retiring and leaving over $10 million from his contract sitting there. Actual I would say there is no chance.

What about trading Lupul to Detroit for Datsyuks contract + a sweetener.

A sweetener for who?

I was hoping Toronto, but I saw that Lupul's deal actually has 2 years left on it as opposed to Datsyuk's one.  So Detroit would be saddled with 5.25 for the next two years instead of 7.5 for one.

Would Lupul make a good development coach? Or zamboni driver? A $10m/year one, maybe...?

I wonder if that means "retirement" or traded.

Does retirement mean that his cap hit fully comes off the books since he was under 35 when he signed the contract?

Yes, if Lupul were to retire, his cap hit would come off the books.

That doesn't really help Detroit, they'd only be saving 2.25M on the cap in 2016-17 adding 5.25M to the 2017-18 cap and paying 9M in real dollars over those 2 seasons.

It helps if Lupul's healthy enough to play and contribute - especially next season - but, as a pure cap move . . . yeah, not so much.

Yeah I was just thinking from the standpoint of it being a warm body to play in their lineup, veteran presence and all that jazz.  Really thinking about it though, it would have to be a straightup deal for Detroit to even consider it.

Which, truth be told, might not be the worst thing in the world for the Leafs, either. Free up cap for next season without having to sacrifice an asset to move Lupul's contract . . . it's not ideal, and it makes things really tight against the cap this summer, but there are definitely worse options.

Another "for what is worth rumour"

Told by a very good source - without specifics - that the #Leafs are "actively and aggressively" trying to land a "top-pairing" defenseman.
