Jonas Siegel just mentioned that Gardiner felt uncomfortable playing the right side and that's why he's going to be back on the left side with Franson.  If so, I like it, and maybe explains any issues Gardiner has been having so far this season.  If it takes Fraser coming back to shake the pairings up and get Gardiner going, so be it.

Well I dunno, Gardiner/Franson might look good on paper, but how would they do in a high-stakes situation like, let's say, a playoff series against Boston OH WAIT

Maybe I'm just going crazy, but wasn't Ranger generally playing the right side on that pairing?

Well, I'm not sure why Gardiner needs to play with Franson to move back to the Left side?  Gardiner and Ranger could have just swapped sides.

In the new pairs, Ranger has to play the Right side anyways because- well, we have way too many Left handed defensemen:

(D-pairs from Practice)
Gunnarsson (L) - Phaneuf (L)
Gardiner (L) - Franson (R)
Fraser (L) - Ranger (L)
Rielly (L) - Liles (L)

They've experimented with both of them trying the right side in that pairing so far.  Recently, it's been Jake on the Right side.  Maybe playing with a more defensively responsible Fraser will allow Ranger to play the Right side more effectively?

I'm not sure.  I couldn't remember something like that from the games so I just figured Siegel would know.

EDIT: And re-reading his tweet, he does have "13 games" in brackets - so I assume that means he played that side for 13 games.

Besides Olympic breaks, does anyone remember having this long of break in the schedule between Leaf games?

In 11/12 - the last full season - they went a week between games 2 and 3. In 09/10, they went a week between games 7 and 8.

What is the take on Smithson?  didn't notice him except for one nice play

Did what he had to - won faceoffs, and killed penalties...

Pretty much.  He only played 9 mins, but I thought he looked good.  Can't complain about 8/9 at the dot.

He's one of those guys that, the less you notice him, the better. If he's doing his job effectively, he's going to fly under the radar most nights.

I thought he was very good.  Having a 4th line faceoff guy is not a bad use of a roster spot.  Steckel was like that.

OTOH the time JFJ traded to get Yannick Perreault back for a second go with the Leafs just flashed across my mind.  *shudders*

I can now say we have the two best goalies in the NHL par none. No we need to find some defense. Dion is good, Gunderson sucks, I don't see why he is praised, I am sorry about the spelling guy. Franzan is good, but Ranger and Gardiner need to go.

Bernier and Reimer are both fantastic right now; I think it's meaningless to try to go so far as to figure who is the best goalie in the league, but they're both certainly elite right now.

Gunnarsson is a quiet player who plays against the top lines and has the unenviable job of pairing with Phaneuf.  That isn't to say that Phaneuf is bad and needs Gunnarsson to pick up the slack, I just mean that Dion has a more dynamic game and jumps into the rush, likes to pinch, and takes slapshots from the point that can occasionally bounce off a knee and turn into an odd-man rush coming the other way.  Ain't an easy job, his, and I think he's been doing it well this season.

Ranger looks a little lost out there most nights, I'll give you.  I'd probably give him an easier time if he didn't take so many dumb penalties.  Mistakes are going to happen, and I'm willing to give him a little more time to ease off on the giveaways, but the dumb penalties.. ugh.

I'm still confident that Gardiner has it in him.  He needs time to mature.  I know it sounds like he's one of the more likely players to leave the team this year, but I think it would be a mistake to let him go.

I thought Gardiner had an amazing game tonight.

Agrees. He was tremendous.

Thirded, probably his best game of the season thus far.

Yeah, Gardiner was not the problem last night. Fraser is skating like he is in quick sand. He cleared Chara out the best he could, which is better than anyone else on the Leafs do, but his skating is in bad need of some Underhill.
