Gleason has intangibles.

I'm beginning to think this team has no plan.

How can there be so many mistakes on these player moves and contracts that they regret afterwards?  It's really unbelievable.  They just got Gleason Jan. 1 and now it is June and time to cut bait.

The impact of Tim Gleason buyout on Leafs salary cap is: $833,333 next season then $1.83M, $1.33M and $1.33M. (Avg $1.33M).

About the same as Liles no doubt..just part of business. I am sure other teams have these kind of bad deals on their books.

How many, after clearing them, jump into worse ones?

Hopefully they structure the Bolland deal in such a way that it isn't as difficult as the Clarkson one will be...to buy out.

Indeed, JM Liles buyout figures from Capgeek:

2014-15: $791,667
2015-16: $2,291,667
2016-17: $1,166,667
2017-18: $1,166,667

In total, a JM Liles buyout cap hit is slightly higher ($5.41M) than Gleason's over the next four years ($5.33M).  In the end, the Leafs weren't using JM Liles and took a chance that Gleason would provide them with some extra ruggedness and better penalty killing.  We know that didn't quite work out, but it's a wash really.

In the end, we all know the best decision would have been using a compliance buyout on JM Liles and a regular buyout on Komisarek last year.

Any way you spin it, this franchise is using buy-outs as a part of regular business strategy rather than the last resort it was meant to be.  The rate in which it is being used is alarming.

Can we see a time when the Leafs entire payroll is made up of buyout money and they can't ice  a team? LOL

Wow.  Well, this is something I hoped for simply to give $3.1 MIL in cap space but I really didin't expect Nonis would do it.  The whole JM Liles, Komisarek, Gleason buyout specter will haunt Leaf fans for a long time but oh well.

I am sure this will be taught at GM school about how not to handle this kind of a situation.

My team. <sigh>.  :-\

Nope!!

.....they still need room for Retained Salary Retentions.    ;)

But your question crossed my mind first.  Only having $32 MIL available for current players would be horrible but plausible if the Leafs management continue like they have over the last 25 years.  Kurvers for the 1st round pick.  <shudders>

I am not a fan of this move because it pushes problems in to the future when the leafs don't have a good team now.  I'd prefer to be worse next year and better 4 years from now.  If the Leafs were contenders now, it would make sense to clear the cap room.

As far as I can tell, the Leafs never, ever make the choice to prioritize a future year over the current one.

It's legitimately funny watching this team aimlessly making moves year after year. If this was the plan then there was no good reason to acquire him.

But of course there is no plan.
