Goaltending conundrum

Jonas Siegel says Reimer starts tomorrow. Makes sense in his home-town. With that said, Gustavsson needs to start the next game if Reimer puts up another so-so performance.

Even if he does play well, he'll have played 11 of 12 games, being below-average in all but two of them, I refuse to see how that necessitates running the table with him.

I agree with this... Seems to me Wilson trusts him way more than he does Gustavson..

The troubling part is, Gus seemed to be hitting a groove when Reimer came back.  Now he's been glued to the bench for so long who knows how he plays when he finally gets a start again.

The question I am left with is why do the Leaf goalies always end up looking the same? Lousy.

And not just lousy - the same kind of lousy.

The Leafs have had the habit over the past couple of years of annointing a number one and then being stubborn about it. It's not as if Reimer earned the number one job with a long resume of strong play - it was really just a couple of months. I can understand (not agree) with giving the job to Giguere before he had earned it but there were plenty of questions about whether Reimer was the real deal before the season began. Those questions look less like questions now.

I don't know if Gus is the answer to any question we may be asking right about now, but I do believe he has played better than Reimer this season, and often against tougher opponents. He should be given a shot - an honest shot - and if he also starts to look like "A Leaf Goalie", then by all means go out and find another contestent.

This is something I've wondered about as well. Goalies seem to underachieve playing here... maybe it's just not an ideal situation for them to succeed, but it seems like playing for TO brings out the worst in them.

I blame the system.

Who's, Wilson's, Maurice' or Quinn's?

It's unbelievable how many times we brought in a touted goaltender and got results but people are still looking the other way. Joseph essentially took a 70pt team and made them a 100pt team.

There are some things to say however, we've got to stop giving up breakaways. Its getting kind of ridiculous. Even a 2-1 is much better than a full fledged breakaway.

Yeah, we were spoiled somewhat with 6 straight years of good goaltending between Cujo and the Eagle.

That's not to say that the current team goes without criticism, they're a middle of the pack team with some upside that play a system that includes trading chances, they aren't winning the cup this year or down the line without some further work, both with the roster and with the cohesiveness and experience of the team.

The breakaways are very, very frustrating.

I only half caught the headline in the paper today but it said something like Wilson said that it wouldn't be fair to Reimer not to start him in Winnipeg. Personally, I think that sort of thing is a luxury that really only the more comfortable teams have. If Wilson thinks Reimer gives the team the best chance to win it's the right call but giving him the start to cheer him up or to give him a nice memory strikes me as sending the wrong message.

I can always count on you Nik. The Jets must be chuffed.
