Goaltending conundrum

Clearly,  Eklund has been reading my posts in this thread ;D ;

"The Lightning and Maple Leafs are both very interested in Kings backup goalie Jonathan Bernier. My sources are almost all in agreement here and the common thread appears to be the Kings want a goalie in return along with a solid forward."

Which means of course, it aint happening.  :-\

Or...maybe you're Eklund?  ;)

Oops, Wrong thread... I'll repost.

Jonas is 11-6 in last 17 games and has a .925 svpct over that stretch.

He has definitely turned a corner of sorts. Good news for the Leafs. I am glad that Gus is playing better. My guess is that they will ride him hard from now on in order to make a playoff push.

As well they should.  Will pose an interesting situation for the Leafs if they make the playoffs and manage to win a round too.  What becomes of Gustavsson and his UFA status?

OK, putting the cart ahead of the horse now.  Let's make the playoffs first before worrying about that.

He is also keeping the team in every game.  If the Leafs managed to score more than one goal in some of those losses, his record would be better.

Gustavsson now has the same save % (.910) as Anderson in Ottawa, and a better GAA 2.73 vs. 2.90

You know, Goose could be playing his way right on to another team. Not saying it's going to happen or if Burke will entertain it but I'm sure there are a few teams asking... and if the price is right?

I am not too crazy over trading a goalie who appears to be playing very well at the moment.  Look at the mess in Montreal after trading Halak.  Sure the Habs did okay the following season, but this season Price and the team as a whole is just plain crappy (it doesn't help when their GM is a dork, but that is another story).  Maybe Halak makes a difference???  Not sure, but St. Louis is not complaining.

The Monster is playing really great hockey right now, and with a few additions up front, this team can make some noise in the playoffs.  I would rather keep both Optimus Reime and the Monster until at least into next season, perhaps going with a platoon system.  Reimer played well before he got injured, maybe he can get his game back.  Until then, neither Reimer or the Monster should be moved.

I understand where you're coming from, but that would be a SCARY thing for the Leafs to consider in the middle of a playoff race.  Trade the one guy who's consistently giving you a chance to win?  They'd have to get a lot back, and I don't think they would given that Gustavsson is a UFA and this is really the only time he's shown he can handle the #1 job for any prolonged period.

It sure would.  It's obviously great that Gus has found a groove and is putting up great numbers while Reimer is struggling, but it puts us in the spot that our current 2nd-string is locked up for two more years and our best goalie right now is set to walk at the end of this season.

Yeah, Brian stated that they wouldn't be discussing a contract until the end of the year as both sides would have points in their favour leading pretty much nowhere at this point. He also didn't sound like a gm who was contemplating a change there, not that my interpretation means a whole lot.

as much as i think that montreal getting rid of halak was stupid ...i actually don't think it's affected their fortunes to this point ...goaltending hasn't been the problem with the habs...it's a complete lack of offense.  and strangely enough on the night when st louis and montreal played each other ...both goalies had eeriely similar numbers since parting ways.  now that's obviously not directly comparable given that they both play for different teams ...still montreal didn't pay for that decision like i thought they would

Just wanted to go on record as saying, despite what may or may not be the prevailing notion that Reimer can't quite cut it (and we were all sadly mistaken), I think what has been wrong with him is essential what went wrong with Gus (and what he has corrected) - simply playing too deep in one's net.
Gus is out challenging a lot more than when he went through his inconsistent funk. That's exactly what Reimer was doing as well during his recent weak stretch. Perhaps, it is a matter of lacking confidence, hanging back in the net. But make no mistake about it, failure to come out and challenge, cut down angles, is a goalie's death knell. The shooters are just too good, they'll pick you apart, especially if there is any tendency to go down early. Then, your Goose or Reim is cooked. I fully expect Reim to start challenging for the #1 spot again, once he gets that straightened out. Meanwhile, I'm liking what I see out of Gus. There would be nothing wrong with having two top notch goalies. Doesn't seem to bother the Bruins. Going back further, there were many great tandems.

Grant Fuhr and Andy Moog
Billy Smith and Chico Resch
Alan Bester and Ken Wregget (LOL)

You know in watching the all-star game and seeing how badly a goalie can look when the d in front of you just isn't there.  I am not saying that the all-star game does not have a talented group of dman, that could not be further from the case.  However, an all-star game of course is a d going through the motions, a D that doesn't take the body, a D that is not sound positionally or one that looks like they are running around. It kind of reinforces the fact that a good defensive system provided there is some degree of defensive talent there can make a goalie look better.  Some of the goals yesterday, kind of looked like our Leafs during some bad times, , Raycroft and Toskala era, pre-Reimer last season and pre-Gus of late.  Our D has since tightened up and our goaltending is reeking the benefits.  It is why you see good goalies often disappoint when they sign that big UFA contract with a new team after having left a sound defensive juggernaut.  It is why you see a guy like Rask look invincible in Boston, he certainly is a good young goalie but would he really put up close to those numbers in Toronto with our system.  It is why a guy like Elliot is flourishing in St. Louis right now under Hitchcock when going into this season he signed a two way deal and was not even guaranteed an NHL job.

Nothing really mind-blowing stated here, just something that went through my mind last night in watching the all-stars and the poor goalies being hung out to dry.

Also remember - the goalies aren't trying.
