Goaltending Showdown - Reimer vs. Bernier

RedLeaf said:
So, let me get this straight. If both goalie stats are similar, but one has 'sprinkles on the icing on the cake', as you put it, don't you play him ahead of the other? Don't you choose the goaltender with the better rebound and puck control over the one without those qualities, given the option?

That would very much depend on the defensive system I'm trying to implement and the quality of the players I have to ice every night. Not everyone likes sprinkles, nor to sprinkles belong on every cake. They may look good, but they really don't add much to the cake.

With rebound control, for instance . . . better rebound control will generally mean more defensive zone faceoffs. If I have a team that's very good on the draw, then, yeah, I definitely take the guy who's going to provide more opportunities there. However, if I have a team that's weak on the draw, but very good at causing turnovers and provides a lot of counter-strike offence, I might like to see the puck kept in play a little more.

It's pretty hard not to go with Bernier at this point. Reimer had a bad game and Bernier has been stellar. Thems the breaks. Reimer will get his chance again.

Yep you keep going with Bernier until he falters. Reimer has actually given up more goals in each of his two starts then Bernier has given up total in 3 1/2 games.

Yeah but juicy rebounds is not the same as sending it into the corner where a D-Man can gobble it up.

Sure, but, I also don't think Reimer gives up anywhere close to as many juicy rebounds as people make it out to be.

Reimer will get the next start.. It almost looked  like he grinned on the bench when EDM scored the fifth goal, know that he still has a chance. But maybe that is just me. Bernier did let in a couple weak goals he should of had.

The thing is as someone here already suggested that Bernier has never played several games in a row, his maximum - if I am not mistaken - was 5 games in a month. So it would be some sort of adjustment for him as well, playing every second night compared to once a week is huge change and naturally he will have bad nights.

But for me this is perfect scenario. Leafs won, Bernier was not exactly at his best, Reims gets a chance. If he plays well, this is exactly both-goalies-pushing-each-other scenario. The Leafs can only profit form that.

Leafs win + bad goals against = profit?

Leafs profit = both goalies pushing each other, anything else you do not get this morning?

Reimer will get another chance to start next game. I would be surprised if he doesn't get 3 starts in a row this year - when he is on he's a great goalie.

In the end, though, Bernier will probably play 50-55 games with Reimer playing 30-35. Bernier is so composed vs Reimer (while good) is sort of spastic.

Hasek was also spastic but he was arguable the best goalie in history.

Moneyball pointed to the problem of evaluating players based on the way they "looked" as opposed to measuring how effective their performance is.  I hope the Leafs brass does not fall in to this trap.  I hope Bernier succeeds and puts up save percentage numbers over a whole season that are even better than Reimer's were last year.  If his rebound control and stick-handling matters and his ability to save pucks is just as good or better than Reimer's then that is what we can hope for.  I'm just going to wait 40+ games before I start to make a determination of whether that is the case ...

That was Bernier's 3rd start in a row. I highly doubt we see one of our goalies start 4 in a row this season unless an injury hits. So even if Bernier played well Reimer would have likely started against Minnesota.

I doubt it happens, but it really wouldn't surprise me if Bernier got the next start, just to see how well he rebounds from his first not-so-good outing.
