Gretzky at 60

How about a new award, the Gretzky Award, for the person in hockey ? doesn't have to be a player or an NHLer ? who best exemplifies the ideals of the Canadian national character: "obliging, humble, supportive."  This is what Canadians are at their best (IMHY*O).  The award would honor the whole Gretzky family, not just Wayne or Walter.

*Yank

I appreciate the sentiment but would you be comfortable with the NFL giving out an award based on who they felt best represented what it meant to be an American?

I think Hockey Canada could give out an award like that. Not the NHL.

Even then I'd rather it be something like the Clancy and be about trying to define what makes for a good person as opposed to trying to define what makes for a good Canadian.

Yeah, that's probably the best way.

Point taken.  Substitute hockey for Canadian and make it about hockey families.  Very few stars get where they are  without family support.  Wayne to his credit has always been vocal about this.

I guess my thing there is that it seems like an odd choice for the guy who is also the all time leading goal scorer and has the record for single season goal scoring. Seems like it should be something slightly more significant and rewarding someone at the very top of the heap.
I don't disagree, but I guess the greatest case that could be made for it would be the oft-mentioned fact that Gretzky has more career assists than anybody else has career points, and therefore that you could take away literally all of his goals and he'd still be the all-time NHL points leader.

Gretzky had 714 more career assists than #2 Ron Francis, which is just wild. A total aside here, but man, if you'd given me 10 guesses at who was #2 all-time in assists there's a good chance I wouldn't have picked Francis with any of them.

So I guessed Adam Oates for #3...wrong again Frank E.

He's #8.  https://records.nhl.com/records/skater-records/assists/most-assists-career

Ron Francis has to be one of the most overlooked greats in the sport.

Yeah, I certainly don't want to talk smack about the guy on today of all days and like I've said I think Gretzky probably has the greatest career of anyone ever even if I like Mario at his prime but at least some of what you're talking about are just the conditions of his time that we should acknowledge.

Like, if you use Hockey Reference's Adjusted Points totals Gretzky is still #1 and by a considerable margin but he's at 2475 and Howe's at 2156, Jagr's at 2080 so still incredibly impressive but not quite on another planet. I think, generally speaking, it would be good for the game(and the Hall of Fame voting) if we could start putting scoring numbers from the 80's in their proper context.

Are they opening it back up again elsewhere or is that the end of an iconic Toronto sports bar?
