Gustavsson traded to Winnipeg, now signs with Detroit

Disappointed it didn't work out for him with the Leafs as he's got the physical tools to be a good goalie, but I do wonder if he has the mental toughness to succeed at NHL level.

To follow this up the idea that Gus and Reimer did what they did "on the same team" is really only true of last year where Gus had the better numbers.

On Gustavvson...

...Jonas Gustavsson, who will probably sign with the Winnipeg Jets or another organization for less money and emerge a capable NHL goalie, once he gets away from a goaltending coach who insisted on making him something he?s not.

This is one of the most moronic things I've read in a while.

I think Ken Campbell, anti-Leaf writer, can be described as that!

Hockeyfan1, you should probably stop reading THN's drivel.

I am currently subscribed to a digital edition format.  While I understand it's not a magazine for every hockey fan's liking, I still enjoy reading some articles on the happenings around the league.  As long as they're not biased anti-Leaf articles.  :)

Fair enough, but that Ken Campbell seems to write nothing but anti-Leafs stuff.  Even today, complaining about Sundin over Shanahan in the HHOF.

What was Campbell thinking? Part of the reason Gustavsson chose the Leafs in the first place was to work with Francois Allaire as his goalie coach.

Ken Campbell is a notoriously lazy writer who would fail to fact check his Star articles for details he should know (or know how to find).

I think giving up Gus for nothing was a mistake.  Him and Reimer are both crap shoots.  I mean, for Gus it's great because he'll probably get more playing time and less pressure, but really the leafs are weak in goal and losing Gus means losing 1/2 of their talent.

Luongo's not coming so it doesn't look good for the leafs in goal.  There's not much they can do.  The free agent market is weak and a lot of players won't play here.

He was a free agent. If we gave him a contract we're back to Reimer/Gustavsson barring a trade. That combo hasn't worked out so well.

That's just not true. Even absent Gus, the Leafs still have 4 goalies in their system, 3 who have played NHL games (even if Rynnas only has a couple to his name). On top of that, there's no reason to retain a player who did not meet expectations just because there's no experienced replacement on the roster. I'd wager Scrivens will be able to provide at least the same level of goaltending Gustavsson did, for less money and without the baggage that Gustavsson would have if he stayed with the Leafs.

As for more playing time - I highly doubt Gustavsson will get that anywhere. If he signs with an NHL team, it will be as a backup, which will mean he'll play a fair amount less than the 36 games he started for the Leafs this past season.

Also with Owuya and Scrivens excelling in the organisation and Rynnas likely to play ECHL or backup the Marlies, we need to make a little room.

I wish Gus all the best, but this is one of those situations where you just have to move on.

Real_ESPNLeBrun: No surprise but J. Gustavsson going to market. Didn't feel Winnipeg was a fit for him

Sign him!  That's the vet presence we need in net!!!

Gus to the Red Wings, 2 yrs, 3 million.

Me and Ken Holland. Great minds, great minds.

Hoping he does well.  Always had faith in him, but felt Toronto didn't work for him.  Too confining his athletic style, a coach that threw everyone under the bus, and a terrible defense.  Think he'll do nicely in Detroit.

Jonas Gustavsson had as much to do with Jonas Gustavsson not succeeding as much as the Leafs did. A goaltender isn't suddenly a "good" goaltender if he puts up average numbers on a stingy team.
