Thanks, Carlton, for taking the time to write up the post, and for this:

I think we'll see Rielly over Phaneuf on the PP by the end of the week.

Mark Masters tweeted out these powerplay lines from practice yesterday:

Phaneuf-Parenteau-Kadri-JVR-Boyes
Gardiner-Arcobello-Bozak-Lupul-Holland

I appreciate the idea behind having 4 forwards on the PP and all, but Rielly just has to be there somewhere.

Arcobello?

Just wondering, I only caught a few games during the preseason and only saw Hunwick once...How did he end up on the first pairing? Is he a better fit up there over Gardiner or Reilly?

I imagine the defense lines are going to be rolled out with fairly even ice time throughout the season. So he's not really "up there" but rather just "there." People are writing it our that way because Phaneuf has traditionally been the team's best defenseman.

It could also be that one of our season-long goals will be to try and find good partners for Rielly and Gardiner going forward... so that once we trade Phaneuf, we have our Top Four of the Future all lined up and ready to go.

Yeah, that's a little odd. I thought maybe his PP numbers in the past were good, but he really hasn't played there all that much. Last season he had about 66 minutes of total powerplay time and put up 4 points. That gives him a respectful points/60 there but it's a pretty small sample size to judge him off. The last 3 seasons combined he's only played 113:11 5-on-4 and scored just 6 points. Again just based off rates it's not that far off from Lupul/Bozak/JVR, but again small sample size.

Also, I just noticed now that both Holland and Arcobello were practising on the PP. Wonder if that means they'll both be in the line-up and maybe Grabner sits instead.

The most interesting thing to me about this opener is just seeing who's going to be on the active roster.

I agree, but I think it's probably his shot that's holding him back a bit.

Based on practice it sounds like Grabner, Polak, and Corrado will be the scratches tonight. That would indicate Harrington is on his way back up once Panik's situation becomes clear at noon. Meaning we'll likely see:

JVR-Kadri-Bozak
Matthias-Bozak-Lupul
Winnik-Spaling-Parenteau
Komarov-Holland-Arcobello

Hunwick-Phaneuf
Gardiner-Harrington
Marincin-Rielly

I know we're not going to win a lot, but it's the Leafs and I'll always get up for a new season and the clean slate that it brings.

I'm excited to see their progression under Babcock and I feel like for the first time in a while they've got some real blue-chips in the system and a management group that's likely to steal us a few more.

Given the almost aggressive lack of enthusiasm on here, I may not bother doing the MotM this year.  Seriously.  It's a waste of time if only a handful of people are going to vote.

Harrington's been called up, no surprise. It's expected he'll play. That'll mean that all 6 of the Leafs defencemen will be left-handed tonight, while 2 right-handed defencemen sit in the press box. I'd expect Corrado might get in once he learns the system, but Polak being scratched even though he's a righty is big news considering how much has been said about Babcock preferring guys playing their proper side.

Just a thought, given tonight's lineup, did the Leafs miss the boat on Polak at the deadline last year?

Wasn't he injuried at the deadline ?

Anyway, the key is not to miss on the next one  ::)

Go Leafs Go beat the Habs!

Well I officially hate Rogers more now, it's $10 a month for the package with Snet with mts tv, which I won't pay for just a few hockey games a month and the Leafs game is on Snet tonight.

NHL center ice has a free preview til the 13th, but it doesn't have the game. Guess I won't be watching the game in HD and will have to use a link tonight.

I usually pick up hockeystreams for six months mid to late October, as then it takes me to the end of the season and usually the first weeks of games are on CBC.

Pick and pay is supposedly coming in March.  Mandated by the CRTC the companies have to un-bundle channels and let consumers pick which channels they want.  Of course I have no idea how they're gonna price it.  Since they know a lot of people would want the sports channels they might jack those prices up, hopefully there are safe guards against this.
