why do we have such a hard time parting with our players?

I'm good!

Good. 3rd line player who can't kill penalties, play any kind of important defensive minutes, barely got time on the 2nd PP unit.... not worth going into depression over, people.

3rd best scorer over the last three years.

No one's depressed, and trivializing depression to trivialize those you're arguing with is falls into the fallacy category of the ad hominem.

They're just saying it's stupid to pay twice as much for twice as long to a guy who puts up the same numbers. Do you disagree?

Real_ESPNLeBrun: Sharks announce Logan Couture officially, which was reported during Cup finals, 5 years, $30 million ($6 M per year)
Only $6? This market is bizarre. I really hope we don't end up paying more for clarkson than the sharks do for couture.

Based on the Clowe deal, Clarkson is looking for more...

Maybe, maybe not.  Other way to look at it: Devs had to overpay to lure a Clowe there and were going to have to massively overpay to keep Clarkson.  Either way they overpay so maybe not really a barometer for other teams on Clarkson.

I wouldn't want to spend that much over that kind of term for this type of winger.

Oh relax I'm not trivializing depression.  You haven't been here very long, have you.

Yes I do disagree because numbers are only a piece of the story.

What do people think about a one or two year deal to one of the good veteran wingers available? Jagr or Iginla or someone like that? Personally, I think it'd be a nice addition to a 2nd/3rd line.

I would consider Iggy if the price is right, Jagr at 41 may be too old

I think a one year deal for Iginla could be a great move for the Leafs. A veteran leader who plays the same style that Carlyle wants his team to play, but has shown an ability to do so at a high level. I'd be all for that. Jagr . . . less so.

Yeah, I probably agree with that. That said I've wanted Jagr on the Leafs ever since he left Pittsburgh so I'm pro-that just on a nostalgia basis.

Well, that'd beat Clarkson for 4 years.

Any contract that comes off the books in a year or two isn't a very bad contract.

mirtle: Devils sign Olesz to one-year deal. Was bought out by Chicago.

GeorgeRichards: #FlaPanthers give Mottau one year, Crabb two...

Jagr is done.  Iginla is worth considering, and I see why you'd only want a 1-year deal, but what would that really get us other than some mentoring (which, granted, is not inconsiderable)?

To be real though that's just a way of saying he's been healthy and been on the team that long.

Yes, it also means he'll hold up and likely not miss a chunk of the season. That sort of reliability is not a bad thing. Probably comes out even with "Lupul scores 1.8 ppg (when he plays)."

A more competitive line-up next season without blowing the salary structure in 2015-16?

Wouldn't get us anywhere on the stealth rebuild though.

Flexibility next summer. Not having an older player near the end of his career tied up for multiple seasons. A trade deadline chip if the Leafs are out of it. And, so on.
