Here's how you trade Kessel....

Captain Positive !!      ::)

Yeah, I know.  I just dislike the use of the media to disseminate information that may drive up the price of a player.  This one seems transparent.  Maybe it's a lack of experience on Shanahan's part.  It wasn't supposed to come off as negative as it sounded.  It was more of a jab at the fact that the statement really doesn't say much at all.

I invite you to read the transcript of Shanahan's media availability: http://mapleleafshotstove.com/2015/06/25/brendan-shanahan-on-phil-kessel-rumours-trade-activity/

On whether he would retain salary to move Kessel:

"That?s not something that we?re talking about right now. I think there is some competition among teams that want him"

Can you retain salary for a limited term, or does it have to be for the duration of the contract?

Has to be the same amount every season for the duration of the contract.

I'm asking more out of interest because I couldn't find it.  Say the Leafs retain 500K on Bozak in a trade but that team gets sick of his lack of interest in the media and buy him out with two years left on his contract.  Is the cap retention thrown out once the player's contract is gone or are you liable for a floating cap hit for the total duration regardless.

I'm not 100% sure, but I believe you get stuck with the dead cap space no matter what the other team does with the player.

I share Redleafs optimistic outlook, Obviously the moves Dubas/Hunter are making like the McKegg deal are looking very smart. We know even great hockey minds have made tremendous knucklehead moves and we cannot expect perfection, but I feel pretty confident that they have to move out the rot for picks and let these youngsters gel together under the best tutelage available.

Basing an optimistic forecast on such a minor transaction seems a bit of a stretch to me, I was quite disappointed with Shany's presser that seemed Kessel centric, rather than holding his cards tightly against his chest he should be fanning any possible interest. I like that the TO media seems to be working themselves into a Kessel frenzy, I hope it will be infectious and drive up the value for Phil.

Its the minor transactions that actually make a huge difference, there are very few home runs to hit outside of our current couple of high draft picks, so the little transactions add up to mean a lot. If you win over 90% of the little deals it does make a huge difference.
So far I have loved every transaction that Dubas/Hunter have made?Lets hope for a few good trades and some more high picks. As well as intelligent picks in all the later rounds.

Mirtle on why the price should be high:

The only players who have produced more points in that span is a list of superstars ? Sidney Crosby, Alex Ovechkin, Evgeni Malkin, Claude Giroux and John Tavares ? and those five aren?t going anywhere.

Neither are the NHL?s other top offensive producers, who rarely switch teams in this sign ?em young, sign ?em long, salary-cap era. Of the top 30 scorers since 2011-12, only Tyler Seguin, Martin St. Louis and Zach Parise have played for more than one team.

One was for off-ice reasons. Another requested a deal in his twilight years.

Parise ? the 29th highest scorer in this four-year span ? was the lone free agent, which helps explain why he received such an enormous payday from Minnesota.

Top offensive talent is very difficult to get, as it almost never gets to free agency anymore. Scorers get paid ? a lot ? and, more and more, they stay with the team that drafts them.

For all the talk of the Leafs? asking price on Kessel being too high, the reality is they should be in the driver?s seat on this deal. They have a player who, for whatever negatives are involved, can do something few others in the league can ? and it?s an element that teams can?t get anywhere else.

Anybody else see that tweet about management being irate that Kessel wouldn't waive his no trade to go to Arizona for the 3rd overall?  Someone else showed it to me.  I don't have twitter.

Not seeing anything from anyone who I consider reliable.

I searched "irate" and "Kessel" and found the tweet. It's from a Rick Vaive parody account.

Okay, thanks.  I wasn't sure if it could be trusted or not.
