Idiocracy

I have a really hard time with Bobby Orr supporting Trump. He was a great hockey player but this will tarnish him forever in my eyes. It's going to become part of my impression of him, and I'll now always feel conflicted about admiring the hockey player (much as I feel conflicted about listening to Michael Jackson songs or some of those classic Bill Cosby routines).

Endorsing Trump means endorsing pathological lying, endorsing his treatment of women, endorsing his rampant racism and abdominal handling of refugees, endorsing his rejection of the science of climate change, endorsing his inaction towards Covid that will end up costing hundreds of thousands of unnecessary lives, etc.

It's a sad day. Bobby was one of my childhood idols. No more.

One more day to make this happen.

This isn?t even relevant if they don?t provide funding to states to actually distribute and inoculate people.  NJ, which is very well organized and has a group of top advisors, expects it to take 6 months to vaccinate 70% of the population, if everything goes perfectly.

Putting aside Trump the nutcase, the thing that baffles me is why people support him - what did he actually accomplish as president that made his country better or help anyone in particular? The most common answer you get is he created a strong economy. But how? What did he do to help the economy?

Unfortunately, huge swaths of the population are just dumb. Theit analysis ends at ?the stock market is higher now than 3 years ago? - a fact that is usually true.

First off, in general, presidents don?t have such a large effect on the economy it doesn?t seem.  Other factors matter more (the internet, a housing bubble).

Second, Trumps economy is not substantially different than Obama?s. He didn?t actually make it stronger than Obama?s ? the rate of growth of jobs was slightly lower than Obama?s last three years.

Third, he existed while republicans in the house and senate devised a tax cut that probably boosted the stock market a little and helped out the wealthy but created a significant deficit.  He also engaged in a series of trade wars that most economists on both sides of the isle think were a net negative.

Fourth, by far the biggest impact on the economy over the past year and going forward involves how well covid is handled.  The biggest single way a president could actually have had a positive impact on the economy would have been to manage it better. Trump failed.

Sadly I agree. Lifetime Leaf fan and Orr decimated the Leafs but I always held him in such high regard nevertheless. Not any more. This is very very disappointing.

Yeah, I was shocked. I mean, it wouldn't have surprised me if he or anyone had conservative leanings, but that he would actually not only vote for Trump, but speak out in his support?

For me, it's ruined the nostalgia of some incredible moments in sports history.

That's a great point. I'd imagine a few would be uncomfortable. I went to his website, and there's fewer NHL players on it that he represents than I thought (about 27ish)
Some notables are Ellis, Carlson, Spezza and Connor Brown.

Who knows? There are probably many that feel the same way. As for Orr doing this, I could care less. If he wants to get behind an asshat, that's his prerogative. It won't change the way I feel about his accomplishments on the ice.

I've learned not to get that surprised when rich white people end up voicing their support for Trump. There's probably a lot more supporters of his in the NHL than you would think.

And while this doesn't mean this player is an active Trump supporter, there's at least one on that list who accepted an invite to the White House after winning the Cup recently. So if he's comfortable taking part in that photo op I can't imagine he'll be that upset about his agent endorsing him.

I agree. Odds are high it will be in philadelphia.

They are putting a wall up around the Whitehouse and are boarding up stores in major cities all over the U.S.. I'm betting on riots no matter who wins, although I believe it will be Biden.

Not only do I expect this week to be violent in the U.S., I expect it's more likely than not that there will be months or more of scattered violence from his mob, particularly if and when he loses.

My guess is that there will be mobs on both sides of the equation. Look, I like Biden a lot but the guy was falling asleep at his rally yesterday, Obama had to help him off the stage.  I would vote for Biden but my feeling is that his VP is going to be running the show shortly and I am not a big fan of that idea.
