Injury Thread / Lou's Corner

Draw what kind of attention? If it's permitted, then it's permitted.

Permitted with special permission, basically.
And IR abuse can be construed as cap circumvention.

Backdiving contracts were permitted before too.

The special permission is required to extend the Bona Fide Long-Term Injury/Illness Exception Conditioning Loan under subsection 13.9. The intention of the section is "solely for the purpose of determining whether the Player is fit to play." What I'm discussing is placing him on a Conditioning Loan per subsection 13.8. Assuming they determine him fit to play (e.g. no longer injured or ill), then why not place him on a conditioning loan? He hasn't played a game this year so it seems perfectly legit to me.

With the 13.9 BFLTIIECL (whew!), he remains on the Leafs IR and doesn't count against the roster. Once fit to play, they have to activate him. Placing him on the standard conditioning loan allows him to get some games in, but he'll now count as being on the Leafs roster. They did the same with Bernier. No IR abuse or cap circumvention here.

Babcock says Matt Hunwick (lower body) skated today & his return is "just around the corner"

I really don't know what's going to happen here once Hunwick is healthy. I get that Babs has a thing for him but there's just no sound justification to have him in the line-up over any of the current top-6. Even Polak.

There's also going to be the issue of roster spots coming up. Both Hunwick and Leivo should be off the IR very soon so two guys are going to have to go down.

Or Lou takes Babs' Hunwick toy away by waiving him now that the team is winning.  Possibly Leivo as well.  I'd imagine they'd both clear, but if Leivo doesn't, I won't be shedding any tears.

I think they'll go back to carrying 8D so I wouldn't be surprised to Griffith and Smith back on waivers, or maybe Holland as he's been healthy scratched for a while now. I guess Leivo is a possibility too.

Or perhaps Brown, Soshnikov or Hyman get sent down as they are waiver exempt. The other waiver exempt players aren't going anywhere (Marner, Nylander, Matthews & Zaitsev)

Shouldn't be a real issue, sure I'd waive Hunwick too but that's not likely. Of course an 'injury' or two could happen and temporarily alleviate the problem.

I wonder how many beach chairs Lou is lining up on Robidas Island. Sounds like a great retirement home.
Wonder if they have a shuffleboard there?

I wouldn't mind a chair on Robidas island.  Good benefits.

Leafs have recalled Josh Leivo. Conditioning stint finally over. Expect some roster shuffling Monday.

Was pointless in 5 games. Played on a line with Gauthier and Kapanen in all 5 games.

I don't think there is anything to read in this. It is five games, and IMO Gauthier is only a defensive player. I never thought Gauthier was ever going to be a point getting forward.

Leivo has never impressed me at all.  The only thing I ever remember him doing is cold-cocking Reimer.

He has scored at a 20 goal pace in the NHL, I still think there is potential there.

It's worth noting he was a late bloomer in Junior.

Keefe had some encouraging things to say about him yesterday, basically that he was getting a lot of chances they just didn't go in and that he was basically just working his way into game action since he didn't get much preseason game time.

Might Leivo still be listed as on Injured Reserve?  It doesn't make sense to me that he could be, considering he just played 5 games, but technically speaking, he wasn't ever activated off of IR.  The LTIR/IR Conditioning Loan is considered a "test to see if the player is healthy enough" but that doesn't mean the player is off of IR.

All 24 players are practising right now, so yeah he must still be on the IR somehow.

According to Mirtle last week, Leivo was never on the active roster (injured in Training camp), and oddly, Soshnikov has not been listed on the active roster online since his recall. As for what that means in terms of why we're rolling 24 roster players in practice now, I have no idea. We don't play until Tuesday, so there is time to make a move, right?

The team technically has until noon tomorrow to get down to 23 players. They didn't put anyone on waivers today, so, either someone else is injured, someone like Hyman or Soshnikov going to the Marlies, or, least likely, there's a trade (most likely of the minor variety) in the works.

EDIT:

kristen_shilton: Leivo will keep practicing and is not cleared to play per Babcock

There it is - Leivo is still on the IR.
