Injury Thread / Lou's Corner

Rielly smiling, speaking to media in shorts. No wrap/brace on knee: "I'm happy I'm walking around and feeling better than I was yesterday."

It's believed to be an ankle injury, not his knee. Officially he's out for tomorrow, and then day to day after that. Corrado will draw into the line-up and play with Carrick tomorrow night.

It will be nice to see the season debut of The People's Player.

Actually, Corrado has already had that this season. Hard to believe I know, but tomorrow will be Corrado's 2nd game with the Leafs this season.

I stand corrected.  He played Nov. 12 against the Penguins.

I figured the Leafs brass was going to try get Smith in 12 more games so that he qualifies for the expansion draft criteria.  Froese also needs 12 more games.

Smith doesn't qualify because he's not signed beyond this season.

I've been thinking about this as well and really am surprised that there's not more talk of which Leafs forwards will be exposed that meet the games played minimum.

I can easily see the Leafs re-signing Smith to another 1-year deal for the sole purpose of exposing him in the draft.  It may cost a little more to sign him in this case but even if they double his salary from this season he's still an inexpensive player that is useful on the Leafs or can be buried in the minors.  I can't see Smith not accepting a contract with a little more money knowing the risk of being picked is there given his NHL history.  This is obviously contingent on him playing 12 more games.

Other options are trade throw ins at the deadline that will satisfy the requirements for those team with "extra" eligible players but they may cost a premium as well.  Perhaps waiver claims later in the year or trades after the season is over.

What I don't want to happen is that the Leafs are forced to leave someone like Bozak unprotected simply because thay have to (although I can't imagine the braintrust letting it get to that point).

Anybody know what happened to Carrick? What are we coming on 4 months... did he tear his tricep from juicing. For a team this light on D losing your #4 defenseman isn't that light. And dollars to doorknobs Morgan's ankle's still bothering him. Zaitzy maybe fatigued, KHL ain't the NHL.

Umm, 4 weeks, not 4 months, and he's been skating/taking part in practice since Tuesday. So, no, he didn't tear anything from "juicing."

Carrick was paired with Rielly at practice today. Could play tomorrow.

That's great news! 12 games in 21 nights to finish the season.

Fehr out for the reminder of the regular season.

Injuried his hand blocking a shot in the 3rd last night.

Too bad, I enjoyed his game last night, specially on that almost 7 minutes PK

Is it just me or does it seems sketchy that an opposition doctor is the one who makes the call to pull Andersen?

The Leafs have a full medical team on every charter apparently, why don't they have their own doctor at every game?

Concussion??

I don't believe the team doctor is actually an employee of the team, but, rather, under retainer. In that case, they wouldn't always be available to travel.

You are correct.  The team doctor has their own practice to run so they aren't always available to go with the team.  Lebrun said that this was normal for most teams, and then come playoff time the team would make arrangements for a doctor to travel with the team.

Wouldn't it make more sense for the NHL to provide a doctor on retainer for each NHL game?  Since they have this concussion protocol to follow, wouldn't they want their own NHL-assigned doctor there as opposed to either of the team's doctor to make the call?

The key word here holding back that sort of logic is: NHL.

Perhaps it's a protection thing.  If there is some wrongdoing then the legality of that wrongdoing stops at the team rather than going to the NHL.
