Jake Gardiner

I think he is going to be a fantastic offensive defenceman. But, ever since they traded Schenn, they have been lacking that big talented 'defense first' D man. No matter what they do up front, they still need to find that guy for the back end.

Erik Johnson, please.

Pretty much the only way you can trade him is for another player on an ELC and I doubt that is happening, maybe a more physical guy like Reinhart would be more agreeable to Carlyle, but I doubt this happens.

Mirtle summed it up really well, pretty much have to live through the growing pains given the cap situation, there is no way he is traded for draft picks imo, even though I think Carlyle would take that offer and replace him with MacWilliam.

x2, Mirtle's summation was very good indeed.

Apologies if it's already been posted.

Yeah, I saw this too. And, while I agree with Nik's view that one of Franson, Gardiner, or Rielly will eventually be moved, I can't see how they can do it this season, if the intent is to get a return that bolsters an area of weakness.

Mirtle's analysis is spot-on -- and thank God if the cap means they can't trade Gardiner.  What a colossal mistake that would be.

Just imagine this ... a Leafs blueline where each pairing consists of a shutdown guy and an offensive talent who also plays decent defense.  That's what we could have IF they hang on to Gardiner and let him mature.  He's not there in terms of defense yet, and as I've argued neither is Reilly (nor even Franson, though except for last game he seems to be stepping it up defensively).  But with some patience, there's a pretty good chance all 3 can get there.

For God's sakes, let's see where this goes before unloading somebody who showed in the playoffs that he can not just electrify but potentially take over a game by setting a flamethrower tempo.

Carlyle must be the only coach in the league who isn't wetting his pants in excitement over the thought of Rielly and Gardiner patrolling his blueline in a couple of years.

Well, I certainly agree.

But one will, at some point, not be with the team. But I think it'd be silly to trade a high-end offensive Dman talent (whether that's Gardiner, Franson, or Rielly) for stay-at-home defenseman. That piece can be found on the UFA market or by trading less valuable pieces. If they're going to move one, I'd hope it'd be for some help up front -- another top 6 center, say.

If one must go ....  :(    But I think you are right.

And apparently a lot of idiots on this thread aren't either.

What a joke

Guy shows flashes of elite potential (playoffs)
And you want to trade the guy.

Sheesh threads a joke.

Didn't Carlyle go on to win a Norris  leaving here to soon?

Gardiner can't play defence. Carlyle is just trying to make sure Gardiner knows that. All the talent in the world won't save him if he doesn't learn. It's a nice balance from the fans and media who want to put this kid on a pedestal. He's a tremendous talent, but far from a great player.

Can't meaning can't get better at it?

I think he can...
Your wrong bud somewhat premature...in your assumptions..
If in a couple of years he's still struggling bad I'll eat my words.
Other elite high scoring damn in the past didn't excell immensely without the puck.
That's is why he along with others wish to have it and go on the offensive.

Wasn't he converted not too long ago from a forward?

mirtle: Heard that the Leafs asking price for Jake Gardiner was "a ****load." So Nonis won't be selling low, I guess.

Good.

As it should be. Too many people are quick to make the leap from "So and so is being shopped" to "The team is willing to deal so and so regardless of what the return is".

Not that it really fits, but it's always time for a Spaceballs picture:
