Also Bowen is just as much of a Leafs lackey as Hendrick.

I sense some distinction between the two.

A lot of the time, Bowen strikes me like he's a sincere fan of the team. He's a homer but like a fan, he's not adverse to making some criticisms. As a fan of the team, I can relate to that.

A lot of the time, Hendricks strikes me as a fan of MLSE management, asking leading softball questions to put the club in the best PR light. He may also be a Leafs fan but the club PR comes first and he stays clear of criticism. He tends to be a pedestal for the soapbox of putting the best spin on the club or it's players - even when controversy is going on. His questions can be rhetorical and he just gets someone else to spew the best PR answer.

I think Bowen is considerably more down to earth.

I think Hendrick's main gig is Leafs TV so he's an employee of the Leafs.

I think so as well. Or that's what he was before the merger.

It was quite a clever thing for MLSE. Before the 2005 lockout, the team was fairly decent but the media coverage was pretty nasty relative to their standings.

I think Hendricks addition diluted some of the media nastiness as did LeafsTV and the internet. Nearly every media scrum or press conference, he gets to ask his softball  question or two that often stops it from snowballing into a consensus bash fest.

I can't say that I blame MLSE. I'd probably do it as well if I were them. But sometimes, when it happens in those scrums, it's a little sickening because it's so obvious what they're up to. He's masquerading like he's a member of the media when he really isn't. He's a MLSE employee with his thumb on the media scales.

I'll weigh in on this.

I like Bowen, mostly because he knows what's going on with the team, and you can tell he's an fan of the Leafs.  He's at least fun, if not funny, and seems to genuinely enjoy what he's doing.

I'm not really looking for neutrality when I'm watching a Leaf game because I'm a fan.

Hughson I like for different reasons...I find him a knowledgeable NHL hockey guy that's a little more polished than Bowen.  Hughson is more neutral, sure, but he's not a lot of fun to listen to.

Bowen is more blue collar, and Hughson more white.  Which one I prefer more depends on if I'm feeling like a blue jeans and beer night, or a vintage blue jeans and micro-brewery beer night.

I only listen to Hughson on vinyl.

Who should I prefer when I'm drinking moonshine out in the park in my underwear?

I think this pretty much nails it in terms of my taste as well. I watch the game for fun, and I want the commentator to sound like he's having fun watching as well, without it being forced (like that guy in Tampa, good god).

I'll bet if Bowen was let go, he still would watch every Toronto game as a fan.

I don't mind Bowen on the radio only, he gets to be even more of a homer doing radio broadcasts.  Seems to tone it down when he's on TV.  I love hearing him and Ralph ripping the officials on a missed call but then they complain whenever the Leafs get called for something.  Just turn the TV volume down and listen to Bowen if you really want.

I know a lot of people say "turn down the volume on the TV and listen to the radio," but it's rare that the two are ever sync'ed up.  Usually, one is ahead of the other and it's kind of annoying. :P

That's been my experience as well.

has there been any news that Healy might be joining Sportsnet?  I keep holding my breath, hoping it doesn't happen but I'm horrified that it might.

IMO today's announcers do not have the same stuff as they once did. Irwin, Cole, Neale, and  Bowen had the stuff that people who have been watching hockey for 40 + years are use to. Today's announcers IMO don't have it, so for me it is volume on mute.

Not yet, but I think they've really only announced their lead play-by-play and hosts so far.

I think if the execs took Joe aside and told him to reel the humor in a bit, focus a bit more, then he would be an awesome Leaf play by play guy.  I sit him down give him a talk and tell him you are our Leaf guy.  Frame is there just needs polish. This now is a big stage and this is what has to happen Mr. Bowen. I like Joe.

living in Boston and listening to Jack Edwards cackeling and boradcasts the Joe sounds like hall of fame material. I love his passion for the leafs and he is quite fair.. I think they could do a lot worse
