Joffrey Lupul

He is the biggest surprise.  I really thought he was just a salary dump Burke HAD to take in order to get Gardiner, and Lupul would just end up in the minors or on IR until his contract runs out.

Between his resurgence on the ice, his leadership off the ice, the type of player you really love having on your team.

It's funny what a year of perspective will do for you.  I didn't think much of Lupul when we got him either, now I can't imagine the Leafs playing without him.  Would be great if Burke could find another "Lupul" in a trade this year, some guy who you might not think will do much, comes at a cheap price, but performs fantastically.  I hate all the trade rumors of packaging up multiple players and picks to get 1 guy, the chemistry this team has going right now is great.  I'd hate to break up the team and get someone back who didn't fit in.

You were used to JFJ and his acquisition of Mark Bell. The good thing is, that Burke is not JFJ and Lupul is certainly nowhere near Mark Bell.

I think it was more a case of the deal being Beauchemin for Lupul and we got Gardiner included because of the risk associated with Lupul.

That's a good way to look at it now I think, but back when the deal was made, I don't think it was viewed that way.

Most media reports I read back then seemed to indicate that Lupul was a salary dump but I could be remembering wrong.

Semantics.

I don't think you throw in your best prospect in that sort of deal. Lupul was definitely the throw-in here, I think the conditions of the draft pick make that pretty clear.

I agree with Deebo here, at least in terms of what was reported at the time...

Maple Leafs head coach Ron Wilson expects him to contribute immediately.

"We've been trying to look for goal scoring, both inside and out (of the organization), and an opportunity to pick up Joffrey Lupul presented itself," Wilson told the CANADIAN PRESS. "We think that we're deep enough as an organization to give up a player like (Beauchemin), who's played well for us and who was a leader on and off the ice.

......

The GM also expressed his admiration for Lupul's off-ice qualities, saying it was a factor in making the deal.

"There's a human element in all of this," Burke said. "You bet on people every time you make a trade. If this were just buying cars or buying livestock it would be a lot easier, but we're betting on human beings.

"I bet on Joffrey Lupul because of his character and his skill level, and I believe he thinks he has something to prove."

....

It was a busy Wednesday for Leafs GM Brian Burke: He added some top-six scoring in forward Joffrey Lupul, added a defensive prospect in Jake Gardiner, grabbed a mid-round 2013 draft pick and said he'd call up Keith Aulie at 12:01 p.m. Thursday.

?In our view, our scoring has been bunched to a handful of people, we're adding an asset (Lupul) that can basically diversify our scoring a little bit, give us some dimension on power plays.

------

?We think the big man (Aulie) can step in and play on defence. He's a young kid, we don't want to put too much pressure on him, he'll make mistakes, but we expect him to come up and be here for a while.?

( my emphasis )

I think there's an argument to be made that Gardiner was included for the risk but I think it's clear from the Leafs words through the media that they expected/hoped to get a top six forward.

They did even better, they got a top 3. Plus, a top-two pairing defenseman not far down the road...
and a Pick... for Beauchemin.

Hands down the best Burke move (followed by the Lebda trade)

I'm not sure Gardiner was viewed as their top prospect at the time.

Anaheim was flush with young defenders with Fowler and Sbisa in the NHL, Shultz, Gardiner and Vantanen whom the organization were high on.

Bobby Mac pretty much just cleared that up.

See? All that talk over drama between Carlyle and Lupul was for nothing!

And that sticks a nice dagger into the heart of my fantasy hockey team this year too ...

Well there goes any playoff hopes we had, might as well just tank for the pick now.  I hope we can trade our pick + schenn for (hopefully) Edmonton's number 2 overall pick.  Edmonton would probably make that deal.
