Kadri signs 1-year extension

Kadri (and eventually Bernier) seem like big enough deals to have separate threads for.

The 1-year thing isn't that surprising considering all the extra stuff that happened with Kadri last season.

4.1 million.  Good for both sides.  Gets paid well but he'll have all of the pressure on him this year.  #1 opportunities but also #1 opposition.

I think it's a mutual show-me contract. It would have been interesting to
hear the discussion on maturity and attitude from the Leafs side.

Thinking as I type this it may have been a hard ball move by the team and if so,
I applaud it.

Honestly I think that the Leafs would have probably been much more interested in a long-term deal than Kadri was. His negotiating position wasn't exactly very strong. Had a slightly down-year offensively and of course had all that off-ice stuff surrounding him.

I doubt it. Even if it made sense from an asset-management point of view unless Shanahan is confident about having a press conference where he says he's sure that whatever issues they had with Kadri were dealt with they're not going to put themselves out there like that.

100k less than Bozak. That's a head-scratcher. Seems like a very reasonable deal.

Hope that isn't a sign that Bozak is staying put.

Kadri has to get it back on track this year & put whatever off ice stuff that management obviously has a problem with to bed. He can still be a pretty good player in this league & a part of the team moving forward if he gets things straightened out. I hope that he does.

... and with the team in general.

The fact is that we lacked leadership and accountability (Kadri was not alone in this regard) but as far as kadri is concerned, to earn the bigger bucks, there must be a demonstrable element of leadership and commitment. Mere talent is nowhere near enough. [See: Kessel, Phil].

And, if it is not there, then so long Mr. K.

The NHL is full of talented paycheques cashing players. What sets Chicago and other contending teams apart, is drive, accountability, leadership and a refusal to quit. If you want to win, that's what it takes.

Period.

At no time did TO seem interested in extending Franson and the same situation seems obvious with Kadri.

He's going to be 25 soon and by the age of 25 a player should be in their prime, it appears he was in his prime 3 years ago and has steadily declined since and has been more of a source of frustration than someone worthy of keeping of going forward. I think the only thread that is keeping him a Leaf is his age because his youth represents a glimmer of hope.

The only thing wrong with this entire string of logic(mine) is that he's a superior 3rd line center who when his icetime is strictly managed can be a huge asset but his salary is going sky high because of the hope and youth not because of what he's accomplished as a 2nd line center. He is now at the apex of what any sane team can afford to pay a 3rd liner, if not over. Kadri made us think that Frattin was a player, Komarov and even McClemment scored when playing with him so it seems he can represent excellent value in the right circumstances.

Kadri is another part of TO's flawed core, paying a player more is simply raising expectations rather than making them a more valuable player.
Let's hope that TO can somehow find the proper players to play in their proper roles and this would enable Kadri to become a valuable part of a successful future.

He's not a 3rd liner.  He isn't played like a third liner and he doesn't produce like a third liner.

His defensive play leaves a lot to be desired, but his production is definitely on the border between 1st and 2nd liner.
