Kessel scores how many?

I want to see Kessel succeed. Obviously it helps with the Leafs draft pick, but also I think he's a decent guy who deserves a bit of success.
 
I do also want to see Phil succeed, he has a load of talent and I wish him all the best. And 47 goals so I win the multi-million dollar pool at this site.  8)

After 44 games played, Phil Kessel is currently on pace to score  22 goals/50 point this season (12-15-27). It's hard to fathom those totals given the talent on the Pens he's had the opportunity to play with.

His SH% has dropped from 2011-2014 with the Leafs where it was around 12% - last year it was 8.9% and this year so far it is the same.  I really don't know why that would be the case, I haven't watched a ton of games but nothing about his shot really seems off to me.  So if he was shooting at say 12% as he did those 3 seasons he'd be on pace for 29-30 goals (with less ES ice-time as those other seasons).  But he's not and I'm not sure what the reason is, and maybe someone else has delved deeper into it than I have.

I noticed that when I looked at his numbers. Other than against the Leafs, I really haven't seen him play any games this season so I have no idea. He's on pace for his lowest shots total (250) since 2008/09 - he had been averaging just over 300 from 2009/10 through his last season with the Leafs (280 last year). Purely speculation, but maybe he's losing a bit of his game as he's aging (28)? Or perhaps he's passing more and taking less shots from spots where he has scored in the past, although that doesn't really explain his SH% last year.

I think that unless you're(not you specifically) the biggest Phil Kessel detractor in the world any discussion of why his numbers have dropped off has to be tied to why the same is true for Crosby and, to a slightly lesser extent, Malkin as well. Clearly something is rotten in the state of Denmark, not just Phil.

But beyond that, as someone who has watched a few Pittsburgh games this year as I'd hoped that they would be a fun to watch offensive juggernaut I will say that one criticism made of Kessel here does seem to have some legitimacy. He's not a versatile player and that does leave him out of the action a lot. As good as Crosby and Malkin are there's still only one puck and I think we all saw that Kessel was at his most effective with the puck on his stick.

I can't see them trading him this soon, especially with his poor performance, the return would be low. Stranger things have happened though I guess.
 
Kessel with goals 13 and 14 tonight.  He's not going to hit 50 but a hot streak (he goes on them every year) and he easily could hit 30-35 goals.
 
And the best part about the hot streak is even the Pens look like they could go on a bit of a run. They might be able to overtake the Rags if they keep up their good play.

Wasn't Kessel's best PPG stretch the season when he and Lupul were tearing it up, both top 5 in league scoring---until Lupul got hurt (of course)? And then of course some good times with JVR; maybe all along it's been a question of finding the best fellow winger!

Ideally we want them to finish 8th in the East (and 16th among playoff teams) and then get eliminated in the first 2 rounds.
