Kessel traded to Penguins

Kessel's farewell tour.

Ex-Leafs coach Ron Wilson thinks Kessel can score forty plus goals with Pittsburgh:

Former NHL coach Ron Wilson predicts a big season ahead for Pittsburgh Penguins right wing Phil Kessel, no matter who centers his line in 2015-16.

Pittsburgh is building a team that wants to win the Stanley Cup now, and I think Phil is only going to add to their success, so I expect him to score at least 40 goals this year and be a dominant player again," Wilson said.

I'm wondering if a team can trade a cap hit or multiple cap hits like TO has with Kessel and Gleason and say maybe Phanny in the future? Some teams want the cap hit but don't want to pay the $s, Arizona comes to mind, so while TO actually continues to pay the actual $s the cap hit(s) could maybe be traded/ moved to another team. I read somewhere that TO was prepared to take back 2 mil. per of Phanny's salary. I believe it was Edmonton, so if TO had 1.2 of Kessel's contract on the books and 2 mil. per for Phanny's, well, that's a lot of dead weight and add Gleason's buy out of 1.8 this year and around 1.3 for 2 years after, together that comes to 4.5 mil. in 2 years, a huge obstacle to hurdle for TO to be ready to compete ASAP, I'd say.

To add insult to injury there's also the Horton situation another 5.3 mil. that won't be available to TO to use to shop for talent during the prime shopping time, the summer, the current buyouts plus maybe Phanny and Horton, it adds up to 10 mil. $s that TO can't use to go shopping, crippling I'd say.

Boston moved the Savard hit which was basically a paper transaction so maybe TO can get creative.

I don't think anyone reasonable seriously expects the Leafs to be a cap team in the next couple of years.

Gotta clear space for Steve to get out of the humid Bay he lives in.

Even assuming that the Leafs don't trade anyone with years left on their deal between now and then by my count the Leafs only have about 42.5 million in cap hit on their books for next season. So even if they do have plans to go after Stamkos they could offer him a max deal without needing to clear space.

I feel that chasing Stamkos would be counter productive much like the Kessel results. Stamkos like Kessel would make TO better than it really is/will be and TO doesn't have the proper support players to make his inclusion with huge salary a worthwhile venture. There isn't enough proven quality on TO or in the system to take proper advantage of having Stamkos, lay the foundation first, if not simply watch Stamkos age without TO being any closer to the cup than it was with Kessel.

Hey Big H, don't forget about chemistry. Maybe this group in three years is gelling with a mix of young and old with great coaching, as you know you never really know.

Chemistry is always an inexplicable variable, for sure, I'm gonna miss Kessel because of his entertainment value and I'm sure Stamkos would be a much better substitute.

If you have 50+ minutes to spare and want to watch a whole lot of beautiful wrist shots...

EDIT: So he scored at an 82 game pace of about 33 goals over 446 games.

If you have a chance to get Stamkos for free....you do it. Thats a year away and the entire dynamic of this team will be changed. Then go after Tavares. Both are and were staunch Leaf fans. Its possible if TB can't get Stamkos signed.

If Stammer doesn't sign in TB, then rest assured, he will be a leaf.

By the time he is on the team, ( a year and a half from now) many of our other guys will be up like Nylander, Marner and Kapenen to add to JVR, Reilly, Gardiner and others. Our team will be set to start making the playoffs and grow from there. We will have a nice mix of size, speed, skill and a solid work ethic with Babs behind the bench. I am excited for this team and I haven't been able to say that in a few years.

If I searched it right on Hockey-Reference.com - of players who have played at least 445 games since the start of 2009-2010, Kessel ranks 1st in goals per game: Link

But of course there are some great players who wouldn't make those games played category.

Anyone who missed more than 13 games in the 6 season period wouldn't make the GP category.

Heavens to betsy!

If you drop it to 400, he moves to 6th over that period.
