Komarov wants back in....

He's making 1.2m in the KHL according to that article. No need to go bust the bank on this guy.

If anything I think it's likely he replaces Kulemin.

I'd be more than fine with that. Get the guy for less than $2 mil and I wouldn't hesitate for a second. 

Just get him longer term though.  And keep Kulemin.

No the article says that $1.2 million is what the Leafs were offering.  This article says he's making $2 million, but the article above says it is believed to be more than double the $1.2 million the Leafs offered.  So probably somewhere around there.

This link also says $2 million.

I'm pretty sure that, according to that article, he's making 2.4 million in the KHL and that's what he's "believed" to be making. It was reported at the time as being closer to 3.

I bet he'd be happy getting 1.75m or so.  Less than the KHL, but not enough of a difference to say forget the NHL. 

I hope they sign him, keep Kulemin, and McClement.  All solid defensive players who are great for 3rd/4th line.  Kulemin will be the hardest to keep most likely :(

I think he can make up any lost income with an endorsement deal as the next World's Most Interesting Man.

I don't understand why we all assume Kulemin is as good as gone. The Leafs based on history have rarely ever lost a pending UFA they actually wanted to keep, and we know Carlyle loves Kulemin, soo....

Well I agree, I bet the Leafs do want to keep him.  But they have 7 forwards, 3 defensemen, and a goalie to get signed for approximately 20 million in cap space.  It might be Bolland OR Kulemin, unless someone like Kadri gets moved.

I doubt Kadri gets moved for the simple fact the Leafs won't be able to replace his production for less money.
 
Really, though, most of the "bring back Komarov" stuff has been of the "I'm sure he'll take X to come back" variety where X is a pretty favourable number for the Leafs. Dude bailed on the NHL once for cash, I really don't see the argument that he's looking to cut the Leafs a break.

So with that in mind, what is the upper number for bringing him back? 2? 2.5? Because I have a hunch that he'll look for 3 per to start.

He pretty overtly said a big part of why he left was to get a more prominent role to make the Olympic team.
 
He didn't "bail" just because of money.  He wanted to get a bigger offensive role to make the Finnish Olympic team, he stated this: "I wanted to play a lot of minutes over here (in the KHL) because it?s an Olympic year and I knew that if I came back to Dynamo I?d get a lot of ice time. It?s hard to say really, I liked the team, the city, everything ? coming back (to Russia) was a hard decision." 

It's reported that he's earning $800,000.00 more than the Leafs reported offer.

Yeah, and Hedo Turkoglu said that he signed in Toronto for our vibrant Turkish community. I don't begrudge the guy earning money, I just think we should be realistic about bringing him back.

Regardless of whether he left for money or playing time, the Leafs can't afford to pay him much more than 2m on a short term deal, given that he has 42 NHL games under his belt with a robust 9 points. I like him, I like the way he plays, but if he thinks he's going to get north of 2m (which I can't rule out) it won't be with the Leafs and even that is a bit much. Raymond has been much more productive (albeit much less physical) for a paltry 1m.
 
Well, Raymond this year isn't a great comparison, unless we're saying that he is also going to get a significant raise  somewhere too.

I'd like to see the Leafs sign Leo with some term, they need him.

While Raymond has been more productive offensively, Komarov would likely be given a significant penalty killing role.  He was 3rd among Leafs forwards last season in PK time per game, so if he's given a contract it's not going to be under the assumption he's going to put up many points.  He also had some bad luck, his SH% was very low last season so you would expect that to correct itself somewhat.
