Leafs Acquire Jake Muzzin

On paper this is now without question the best defence group the Leafs have had in the cap era. We should absolutely make it worse. Immediately.

I'm sure there aren't too many Stanley Cup winning D-men available who you can put into your top pairing so from that standpoint this looks like a shrewd move by the Leafs to improve the blueline. No chance that Gardiner is dealt as the Leafs will be all in this season. If they were willing to bite the bullet on JVR and Bozak they'll do it again with Gardiner. Any way you slice it the Buds addressed their greatest area of need with this deal and the team will be better for it.

* shrugs *  Asset management.  Can the team -- long-term -- afford to let 25 + 42 + 51 walk for nothing?

Welcome to Toronto, Mr. Muzzin.  (Can't wait for you to bowl over some Bruin in the playoffs).  😆😊

I get where you are coming from. If it were me I would have traded one of JVR or Bozak last year at the deadline because that team wasn't yet ready for a Cup run IMO. Who is to say what the offers were like, but they must not have been worth it in management's eyes? There is a lot of truth to fans overvaluing players on their favourite team.
This year with the additions of Tavares and now Muzzin (with more deals to come) I like the Leafs chances a lot more this season and so would be reluctant to deal Gardiner. The only way I'm okay with moving Gardiner at the deadline is if you package him with assets that bring back a better blueliner in return and lets face it that is highly unlikely.

This is a really good trade. I'm happy. Giving up Durzi is tough, but you've got to pay up to get someone of Muzzin's calibre.

I can understand the thoughts of some to trade Gardiner now, but I say he keep him to actually enjoy a solid D-corps.

Don't know what Durzi will become.  He was passed over entirely in the draft 2 years ago, and then the Leafs selected him as an over-ager this past summer.  He looks good in junior, but then again he's an older junior so he should be looking good.  Leafs still have Liljegren and Sandin as the 2 best d prospects.

There's presumably some injuries there this season but the fact that he's scoring at a lower pace this season as an overager than he did last season isn't exactly super encouraging. I wouldn't be completely surprised if the Leafs sold him at his highest value right now.

I was being kind. I think this is actually a bit of a steal, given his cap hit and additional year on his contract. Giving up three prospects/picks is still a significant cost, but I think the Leafs come out ahead year by quite a bit.

You never know how a player will perform moving to a new team but this certainly makes the team a lot better.  I would much rather we use this kind of prospect pool and the draft pick for a guy like Muzzin than to get "grit" in a trade for a Simmonds.

I'm a little interested in Grundstrom's inclusion here. Is it more of a sign that LA considered him the best of Toronto's remaining wing prospects or that Toronto considered him to be just one among many? He was frequently mentioned as someone who the Leafs had who would provide some more diversity to the skillset so I wonder if this is more about his value or the Leafs maybe being higher on Timashov/Bracco/Whoever

I'd imagine Moore's emergence made him slightly more expendable from a Leafs POV.

Possibly, yeah. I wonder if LA targeted him because he's the closest to being NHL-ready rather than the highest ceiling. I don't think there's much separating the Leafs' top wing prospects, so, being closer to being able to contribute could certainly be enough to make one guy seem more valuable.

That's pretty bad on their part if they are targeting NHL ready prospects I would imagine.  That team is not a retool away from being good again.
