Inauspicious start to the Eric Brewer era.

It's honestly perfect.  Have guys that have absolutely nothing to do with the future/trades drive the team into the ground.

Remember that time when we traded Anton Stralman for Wayne Primeau?  Yeah.

In fairness between Luke Schenn, Jeff Finger, Mike Komisarek and Garnet Exelby, that was a pretty tough defense to crack.

I know Stralman wasn't setting the world on fire by any means but I think it's telling when the four guys you list are slow dumb defensemen.  Exactly the kind of guys Burke tried to build the team around.

Starting to understand why Brewer was brought in to finish out this season. Really good pick up for the task at hand...

Twice more ... would be kind of a reverse Boyd Devereaux ... that's what we need

:)

Hey Nick Kypreos, congratulations on being the 100th person to compare Dion Phaneuf to Larry Murphy over the last few days. A few quick things:

1) Larry Murphy did not go on to win the Stanley Cup, an incredibly stacked Detroit Red Wings team on which Larry Murphy played a role did.
2) Nobody wants to just give Phaneuf away.
3) Fans aren't the reason the Leafs want to trade Phaneuf

You know, as tough as Phil Kessel sounded going after the big boppers in the Toronto press core I'd have been far more impressed if he'd dropped the gloves with Alex Ovechkin after the Komarov hit. That, as retrograde and caveman as it may be, would have been the far more powerful statement about how you feel about your teammates.

I wouldn't necessarily say I condoned the trades at the time, but when guys like Stralman, Steen, Boyes and Tlusty in recent years were moved on from the organization, I wasn't overly caring about any of those moves (maybe Steen a little).  But to see them go on and have varying degrees of success with other organizations really emphasizes the lack of developmental success the Leafs organization has been able to accomplish with a majority of its youngsters.

I'm hopeful that Shanahan, Hunter, Dubas and whoever the GM may be implement a development system reaching the organization from top to bottom that we will be able to boast about, and have others be envious of, over the next 5/7/10 years.  And not just Leaf draftees.  Also that (those) reclamation project(s) who the Leafs turned into a bonafide stud(s).

Stralman was the one I was the most upset about by far. Even more than Rask; though that was partly because I was suckered into the Pogge hype a bit.

Stralman certainly wasn't lighting the world on fire at the time he was dealt but I think it's telling that Burke/Wilson chose slow dumb defensemen who can only dump and clear.  It was a pretty significant flaw of Burke's approach to team building.
