Leafs name assistant coaches

Bringing in a great team of effective coaches should improve special teams, but immediate improvement isn't going to necessarily help get the horses needed to improve the team long term. It may in fact, be a detriment in providing opportunity to improve through the draft. Isn't that the main objective of the Shanaplan? Good or bad for the big picture, count me in with those who think the Leafs will start to improve immediately next season. A few more terrible seasons of finishing at, or near the bottom may not be in cards anymore.

The Leafs weren't going to bring in crappy coaches just for the sake of keeping the team near the bottom of the standings. If we keep the exact same group as last season odds are yes they'll have a better season (partly because of better coaching, partly because some players are just bound to rebound from poor seasons). That's just more reason to make sure we unload guys like Kessel sooner rather than later.

That's why it's so important for the Leafs to start moving talented players for future pieces. Talent will mainly dictate where a team finishes. The best coach in the world wouldn't have made anything out of last year's Sabres.

To put some numbers behind this, the Wings had their PP go from 18th in the league (17.7%) in 2013-2014 to 2nd in the league (23.3%) in 2014-2015. That's not insignificant.

Wow. You're right

Sounds like the Leafs are going in the right direction.  If Detroit's pp improved significantly under Hiller, we can expect to see a further rise for the Leafs.

Potentially. Depends on who the Leafs unload this summer. All I care about is that it means Kadri gets on the no.1 PP.

It's going to be great when Kadri finally gets the top line role and he looks over at the teams new RW1: Richard Panik.

AshleyChaseTV: CONFIRMED: Toronto Maple Leafs hiring Steve Briere as goalie coach. Has been working with USHL/NAHL goalies & independently last few years.
