Yeah, that's right. You back away slowly. Back away from your earlier beliefs!

Also, Ugh. Never mind bottom 5. If they have to run with that lineup for an extended period, that's 30th overall.

Kadri lower body will not play, Cowen's hips need loosening and he won't play tonight. Marincin and Corrado remain on 3rd pair. #TMLtalk

Cowen haha.

So the line-up is:

Grabner-Holland-Komarov
Greening-Arcobello-Parenteau
Winnik-Spaling-Leivo
Clune-Froese-Boyes

Hunwick-Rielly
Gardiner-Polak
Marincin-Corrado

Bernier
Wow... sole possession of last place is in sight. This is likely the bottom for us, this game will likely be the worst iced team during this rebuild.

Cowen haha.

According to Babcock, 10 or so days until Cowen is ready. So, to answer RedLeaf definitively . . . no, he cannot be salvaged.

Never say never.  Babcock and company just might turn him into something special.

Like a 3rd round pick and a bad contract so another team can buy him out, maybe. A player? Well, he has this little problem in terms of being able to skate . . .

Maybe that's why they are working on his hips.  Hip and adominal surgery can affect your skating.  Anyway, don't write him off just yet.  I'm not....

Man, 10 days to loosen his hips? Hopefully he didn't think Cartman was a ghost, LouLouLou...

Maybe that's why they decided to work on his hips.  Anyway, I doubt they are writing him off just yet and we shouldn't either.  if they can make the pylon look good, they will with this kid too

Phaneuf is to Cowen, as Cowen is to an fire hydrant. They're MILES apart in ability, never mind mobility, health, etc. I doubt Cowen gets another NHL contract. He's really that bad. He can barely skate, has extremely extremely low hockey IQ, is bad with the puck, and developed a reputation in Ottawa for not being particularly coachable. It will take a major miracle for the Leafs to turn into anything more than a player whose contract represents a cap-related oddity - and the team just doesn't have enough time with him to make that kind of miracle happen.

They decided to work on his hips because he's missed time with injuries related to his hips, and they may need him as lineup filler after the trade deadline. That's it. The only reason he was part of the trade was because Ottawa needed to move salary. The team may not be writing him off, but that's only because they already know there's nothing there to write off. He's not a reclamation project. He's a contract they were saddled with.

How could you possibly know what they plan to do?

Because, I know they're smart hockey men who have a good grasp on just how bad Cowen's skating issue are and where his actual value lies. When they've talked about the assets they picked up in the trade, they've focused on Lindberg and the draft pick. Everyone else involved has basically been an afterthought. The writing is on the wall. All you have to do is read it.

Yup, his biggest asset is his buyout cap credit.

Cowen is also lacking in the departments our management team is specifically drafting for: skill, speed, hockey IQ. These are not things that can be taught in 18 days, or even a year.

Exactly. They're not things that can be taught at all, really. They can be honed or helped to reach their potential, but when the ceiling of those areas is low, that's not going to help much. I mean, you can polish a turd, but, at the end of the day . . .

That has to be the worst lineup I've ever seen for the Leafs in my lifetime.

There were some bad teams in the 80's, but they had a few good players.

I remember seeing him before his injuries and surgery. There is talent there and he's a giant.  The Leafs have excellent trainers and medical people, not to mention the best coaching staff in the league.  He might well be done but I'm not betting money on it.  Time will tell I guess....

You'll just be smearing it.

Is this the bottom? The pain Babcock mentioned is this lineup.

This lineup is basically on par with what you'd expect from an expansion team.
