Eeesh. Refs blew that. I thought it was weird that there seemed to be so much confusion about that around the Florida bench. And I remember afterward the ref was shown talked to HQ by the penalty box and then went to the Florida coach to talk to him and the coach was PO'ed. I'm guessing that's when the actual ruling was explained.

Not really surprising considering they said it had never happened in the NHL before (or not for decades or something).  I can understand refs not knowing every single rule in their heads - although why there was no one in the building who could have first verified that for them I'm not sure.

It's never happened with two guys before, but I remember a few instances where university/college guys or goalie coaches were brought in to fill the back-up role when the starter was injured.

How anyone comes away from the win last night thinking it occurred for any reason other than Luongo's injury is beyond me.  Montoya gave up 3 goals on 15 shots including one goal when he playing like a hobbled old man.

Yup, there weren't really any signs that the team turned a corner or anything. Tank nation can probably breath easy...

Yeah. I wouldn't be too sure about that.

We've seen enough fight in this team when the chips are 'no longer' down, it's hard to imagine that very much has changed with this squad this year.

Last season they won 2 of their last 14 games.

Exactly. Since Ron Wilson took over behind the bench, they have a collective record of 56-56-5 in March and April. In the last two full 82 games seasons, their record in March and April is 12-23-4. This team doesn't fight when the pressure is off. They fold. Just like the really did last night. They allowed 40 shots and barely scraped out a 1 goal win against a team that was forced to play an injured backup goalie for basically the entire 3rd period.

So Tallon saying he might chase a goalie if Luongo prognosis isn't favourable?  Bernier?

I don't think that they would chase a goalie with that much value. They obviously wouldn't have any need for Bernier beyond this season. A pending UFA on a non-playoff team would be the perfect fit, but there aren't many options there. I was going to say Victor Fasth in Edmonton, but he's hurt and not very good anyway.

And before anyone asks, teams can still make trades at any point past the deadline, that player just isn't eligible to play for his new team in the playoffs.

Was it supposed to be such a serious injury that he'd make such an off-season move?

Montoya's apparently done for awhile. So even if Luongo misses just 2 weeks, would they put their playoff hopes on the shoulders of Dan Ellis? I guess the idea would be to trade for a goalie to just get the Panthers in the playoffs, or keep them in a playoff position until Luongo gets back.

How would you trade for a goalie after the trade deadline?

EDIT: Should have read above.

I could see Florida ownership thinking playoff revenue needed immediately.

And really, the Leafs wouldn't likely be looking for a King's ransom, would they?

I should clarify...I didn't read that Tallon said that, I read that that was speculated.

For Bernier? 1st round pick, minimum. But it's tough to say what Florida would consider fair value when they're just going to trade him again in the offseason.

I SAID BEFORE ANYONE ASKS!!!

Something I've legitimately never thought about and can't remember ever happening (although I'm sure it has).  Also something you'd think they would mention once or twice during the weeks and weeks of trade deadline talk.

I doubt it. They were only sold a little while ago and the owner had to know he was in for a long haul.

Before McKenzie brought it up I used to think that it was when playoffs started any teams not participating in the playoffs could trade with each other. It's kinda surprising really that you don't hear about teams talking trade after the deadline, especially non-playoff teams.

Oh my the drama:

Bob McKenzie was... wrong? What planet is this?

I am pretty sure then that the rule is trades can start happening once the playoffs start, but only between teams not participating.
