Mike Johnson!!!! Breaking down Matthews' second goal.

that was so awesome.. Like the littel stick tap on Karlsons left leg only to steal the puck on right side.. I guess when they say someone has "hockey smarts" he is an example

Only one game, but this puts my prediction for a Nylander Calder Trophy in doubt. I think I'm OK with that.

Matthews
Marner
Nylander
Zaitsev

So much to be hopeful about.

Sorry wiki states that he let in 4 or more goals in each of the final games of the 2015 playoffs.

Right. It's 2016 though. That's more than a season ago.

Ok I get that now, but my point still stands, he hasn't played well in preseason and let in some stinkers tonight,  has played bad in the past,  I hope he gets it together.

Sure but even Carey Price has played bad in the past.  Andersen's coming off an injury and is probably a few weeks behind everyone else still.  Just like Matthews isn't going to score 4 a night, this most likely is not indicative of how Andersen will be either.

?We were all a part of history,? Babcock said. ?From my perspective, since I have been the Leafs coach, that is the best night I have had here by 10 miles. Not even close.

?Because now we have an opportunity. I know Matthews scored all the goals, I thought (Mitch) Marner in the first half of the game might have been the best player. I thought (Willie) Nylander was great, I thought (Zach) Hyman was great, I thought (Connor) Brown was great, thought (Connor) Carrick was great, thought (defenceman Nikita) Zaitsev was great.

?I?ve never seen anything like (Matthews? performance). But he is a good player. You see that second goal he scored? Not many guys do that.?

Pleased Babcock picked out Marner, I thought he was definitely the best player for the early going in the game and deserves that praise. 8 mire games to enjoy before he goes back to Junior now ;D

Matthews liked some interesting tweets congratulating him last night.

lol

I hope they don't make this a thing, give the kid a break.

I don't see anything at all wrong with liking a tweet from a contributer at Fansided.com. Nothing wrong at all.

Every goalie has played bad in the past at some point. He didn't have the world's best game last night but right now it's just one game.

You'd almost think we're so conditioned to negativity that people can't just enjoy an historic night without having to try and find a negative

I also think it's a bit of an exaggeration. Most of the sens goals were scored on guys with wide open looks being left completely alone. Then there was the tip on the Karlsson that nobody could do anything about.

Ideally, yeah, you'd like him to make a save on one of the Turris goals and the Brassard one sucked but the standard some of the people using for criticizing him is just flat out insane. We saw this with Bernier last year too. The circumstances of the actual goals are secondary to people with unrealistic expectations who think that the situation should dictate whether or not a goalie decides to make a save.

Well, they lost, right?

I really enjoyed the game, but we're fans, and we come here to discuss the pluses and minuses of the game.

Their defensive game was a bit of a mess.  Seemed like what we'd expect from a bunch of new teammates early in the season, not to mention a whole bunch of them are new to the league.

Goaltending wasn't strong, but I think the loss in mostly due to lack of good defensive positioning by both forwards and defensemen last night.  Work in progress, for sure.

But the offensive talent sure seems light years ahead of last year's team.

Not able to watch complete games this preseason but saw last night.  Was able to catch the hilights and Game in 6 for the preseason though.  Montreal's 6-1 drubbing was mostly on Andersen's pathetic goal tending.

For all the positives I could take from last night's game Andersen again was terrible.  I don't think I have seen a 6'4" 220 + lbs goaltender ever be able to make themselves so small in the net...even when leaving the crease to challenge a shooter.  I have seen NOTHING in Andersen's game to make me comfortable that the Leafs signed him to a long contract with huge pay.

Usually I am optimistic here and I have seen you and Nik try to temper people's expectations.  Seeing you guys trying to pull people off the bridge and give Andersen a chance is the only thing giving me a little hope.

Absolutely, but we've people calling the guy a bust after 1 game and wanting him replaced and saying he isn't the answer.

That all may be true, but how about giving the guy and the tea in front of him a week or two at least to get used to one another.

I'm still not sure how that one Turris goal went in where Andersen was coming out of the net to cut down the angle (which is what goalies are supposed to do) and it actually hit him yet still went in.  Turris was so close to Andersen I figured there is no way that could go in considering Andersen is listed on NHL.com at 6'4".
