I want to say yes. I think sometimes the media makes it seem like it's playing a game that burns off the year, but really the Leafs have signed this kid to a 2-year deal for the 2014/15 and 2015/16 seasons. He's 23 so there's no sliding years here. The contract has kicked in immediately. Toronto could technically send him home with his signing bonus and that should count as a year.
The other scenario that generally happens here is a team signs a player to a contract that starts next season, and then has their AHL team sign him to a PTO so he could play the remainder of the season/playoffs there.
