Not sure who this source is that you are quoting but the 'skates really well' part makes me question the credibility of his scouting analysis.

Several people around the Leafs said that Gauthier has making significant skating improvements since consulting with Barb Underhill.

I know Pronman writes for ESPN, Hockey Prospectus and several other sites.

I've also seen him interact with Bob McKenzie etc on twitter, they seem to respect his knowledge.

 
To answer my own question, they are playing Gauthier on the wing and as a defensive specialist, so once the Czech's were up a few they benched our man? not nice
 
Gauthier was out there for final 40 seconds of the CAN-US match at WHJC protecting the lead, winning all 3 key facoffs in Canada?s end. It says a lot about him.
 
I like what I have seen of him so far, I think we have a great prospect there.  We could be a light bigger down the middle in 3 or 4 years,  Gautier and Holland, could be good.
 
The Big G wins 3 straight faces in the defensive zone at the end of the game to help Canada secure a 3-2 victory over the US
 
He won defensive player of the year in the Q, pretty remarkable considering he missed a significant amount of time, gives you an idea just how highly regarded that side of his game is, he dominates in his own zone.

Obviously it's a real accomplishment and everything but I can't help but find the very concept of a defensive player of the year award in the Q to be kind of funny. What did he do? Accidentally bump into someone on his way back to the bench?

Thanks - I hope the plan for him is to spend a couple/three years there continuing to develop both offensively and defensively against professionals. 
 
A lot of people are not hot on Gauthier, I am.  He is 6'5", he is a specialist. Will be probably a very good 3rd line Centre, if he can keep developing his offensive game he may make #2.  I like his size, his strength and his presence. 

I remember him scoring a nice goal in the preseason. I think there is a lot more potential to this guy than some think.

With the old Top 6/Bottom 6 model dying a slow death I think there's less of a divide between the #2 and #3 centre spots than you're making it out to be. Good teams nowadays will have three centres who can fairly regularly contribute offensively to the tune of 40+ points a year.

The question with Gauthier is going to be whether or not he can hit that level or if he'll exclusively be a defensive specialist which, right now, is probably more accurately described as a #4 centre.

Gauthier reminds me a lot of David Steckel.
