Leafs sign Nikita Soshnikov to entry-level contract

I'm all for taking a chance on a few Russians. They seem to all be criminally underrated at this point considering everything. The Leafs haven't drafted a single Russian since Kulemin, that was almost 10 years ago.

He's also saying the right things in regards to the AHL, so that's nice.

after watching the video, the guy seem to have a sick skill set, good wheels and a really good vision of the ice, also made a great defensive play.
Lets hope he translates

Atlant president and former NHL star Valeri Kamensky said Soshnikov could make the Leafs? lineup next season but it will take dedication.

?I think he could improve in strength if he played one more year in Russia,? Kamensky said. ?[With another year of seasoning] he would become a ready master and could leave [Russia] as a leader. [With the Maple Leafs] he now has a two-way contract and will most likely be playing with the  farm club, [where] they will make a player of him.

Of course, I hope Nikita will get to the big club  [but] I don?t think it?s realistic in [his] first season.  During summer it?s possible to grow, to build muscles, to go through a special program ? nothing is impossible ? everything is up to him. I wish Soshnikov luck and success.?

Kamensky thinks he'll probably need a year in the AHL

The 21-year-old Russian forward, who was never drafted by an NHL club, said the Maple Leafs came calling about a month ago and after consultation with his family and friends he decided to make the move.

?Everyone was for it,? he told championat.com. ?Because I?m a young guy and the NHL is my dream.?

Soshnikov said he knows he will have to earn his place on the Leafs? roster, noting he is not afraid to be sent to the American Hockey League.

?Will it be more difficult in the NHL?  [Perhaps] but I?ll be growing faster as a player.  I?ll be making faster progress,? he said.  ?I signed a two-way contract.  I know I?m not guaranteed a place in the starting lineup. It is clear that [I can be] sent to the AHL.?
...
?Money is not the main thing for me now,? he said.  ?I?m young ? everything is ahead of me!  My dream is to play in the NHL where the best players are.?

Soshnikov has been playing professionally for some time, but has that experience prepared him for the famously passionate Leafs fans and the hypercritical Toronto media?

?I was told what the fans were like there ? how ice hockey was popular in Canada,? he said.  ?I?m very happy that I made this decision. I?m not sorry about anything ? I?m scared of nothing.?
...
So when can Maple Leafs fans expect to get their first glimpse of Soshnikov?  He is not sure when he will travel to North America but he said he hopes to suit up for Russia at the 2015 World Championships in the Czech Republic in May.

Seems to have a decent attitude  and expectation about it

A key risk with drafting Russians has been the concern about whether they'd come over to play. Obviously, that isn't a concern here.

An interesting little revelation came from this signing: Toronto currently employ an assistant coach in the KHL as a scout for the Leafs, Evgeny Namestnikov. Soshnikov played on that assistant coach/scout's team and may have helped persuade him to sign with the Leafs. Some wonder if that type of double affilation should even be allowed:

Atlant didn?t challenge the move (Soshnikov?s NHL contract kicks in next season but at the time of the signing he was still under a KHL contract where he?ll become a restricted free agent come May 1), so it?s pretty safe to say they didn?t have a problem with their coach working for an NHL team, especially considering Atlant is the most financially-troubled KHL franchise and is rumoured to be leaving the league as soon as this summer.

Namestnikov?s affiliation with the Leafs gave them an unfair advantage over other NHL teams. It?s almost certain that the Leafs were not the only club in pursuit of Soshnikov. However, having their scout embedded in the player?s current team undoubtedly provided them with an inside track to secure Soshnikov?s services. The stories of people getting drafted or signed due to the ties their relatives had with NHL managers aren?t uncommon (for example, the Caps drafted Jakub Vrana in part due to their scout Vojtech Kucera?s long-standing familiarity with the player). But in this situation the Leafs used a professional, not personal, affiliation with the player. As of right now, Namestnikov is still a member of Atlant?s coaching staff.

Seeing as how no rules were likely broken here, I can't see how anyone can complain. Seems like a very savvy move by the Leafs there.

Keep breaking the rules and find the best players.  Smart hockey minds make good hockey teams. Great work to whoever put this in place, perhaps 'Hunter' is hunting.
In other words: beat your competators to the market.

But they're not breaking any rules.

To my knowledge, there is no poaching agreement that exists between the NHL and the KHL.

I'm not sure if that agreement still exists, bu his contract will start next year, after his KHL contract is over.

I believe it still exists, but, nevertheless, the Leafs bent the rules here more than breaking them. As you point out, his contract expires at the end of the current season and they went through the proper channels to get permission from his current team to get him under contract early. This wasn't a case of poaching a player under contract.

I wonder if the franchise might relocate to Winnipe.
