Leafs trade for Dave Bolland

Big, defensively minded #3 center who excels at shutdown.  I like Bolland and all, I just kind of wish we would have drafted somebody like that today.

He wouldn't be ready for at least a few years.  Bolland is available to play for us now.

Honestly the price is so low and there's so little commitment that even just adding some depth/scoring touch to that middle 6 makes it worth it.

The best memory I have of Bolland is Chi vs Van 2 years ago.
He was injured and Vancouver got up 3-0. Once he came the momentum completely shifted to the Hawks and they forced it to gm 7 OT.
He brings a lot of intangibles that's not on the scoresheet

A second and 2 4ths.  Sure.  I liked Bolland when he was with the Knights.  I still like him with the Hawks.

Not sure how I feel about this.  His cap hit is already fairly large... Is 3.375 M not high for a 3rd line C?  And to be re-signed, he'll probably want a raise...

Yea, that is what I was thinking, he is listed as #2 on the Hawks depth chart, was he used on the second line? that price for a 2nd line C is good, but for a 3rd liner C, its a bit too high for my liking.

If Nonis doesnt pick up a C this summer, does Kadri become #1, Bolland # 2, Grabs #3? If he picks someone up, does he trade Grabs?

Grabs and Kadri are probably our #1 & #2.
Since Grabs never plays with Kessel, I guess Kadri can be seen as a #1?

I guess so, unless Carlyle tries out Grabs with Kessel. What happens if we pick up a legit #1 C next weekend, there are some options out there, good chance compared to previous years to get one. I guess if tradition has anything to do with it, we had Sundin all those years and lacked a legt winger on his line, Kessel doesn't need a legit C lol

this trade is LHF approved! I love Dave Bolland! :-)

(plus which, I can take the nine off the Frattin sweater, turn it upside down and voila! I have a BollandBear?if he wears 36 here)

Having big game players is what separates good regular season teams from good playoff teams. For the price, I think Nonis did pretty well here.

My guess is Joe Colborne is not to happy about this deal.  Bolland will be a good influence on the team with the Stanley Cup pedigree he brings to the Leafs.

So this means what for Joe Colborne?

Realistically, nothing. He wasn't going to be given the #3 center job unless he earned it and, if he does, they'll find a place to get him into NHL games.

More development time with the Marlies.

I think they want to play big Joe on the wing. Maybe he plays with Bolland.

Pretty easy to start him on the wing.  Or, pair him with McClement where he gets some offensive draws but Jay takes the defensive ones.

Based on pure talent right now the lines should be something like:

Lupul-Kadri-Kessel
Van Riemsdyk-Grabovski-Kulemin
(Open Slot)-Bolland-McClement
McLaren-Colborne-Orr

Ideally to me the Leafs sign another UFA for the bottom 6 and maybe even another guy for the top 6 so that McLaren and Orr aren't playing on the same night.    I still would love to add Boyd Gordon to the roster to give another strong defensive player who can win faceoffs.
