Leafs trade for Taylor Beck

Pretty good AHL/Junior scoring numbers even if they haven't amounted to anything at the big league level just yet.

Yeah, I mean Devane doesn't really have an NHL future and certainly not one with the Leafs.  Beck probably doesn't amount to anything either but he's more of a hockey player than Devane and there is some potential that maybe the Leafs tap into.

mirtle: Beck has elected for arbitration which is likely why the Predators dealt him.

mirtle: Leafs adding Beck should activate the second buyout window for Toronto, too. Not that I think they're buying anyone out...

mirtle: But Leafs could now trade for a bad contract + an asset and buy the deal out for another team. In theory. Lot of candidates out there.

That's an interesting scenario. Probably an unlikely one, but interesting nonetheless.

I half-read this as "Leafs trade Taylor Bozak". Words can't describe how soul-crushingly devastated I was when I read it properly.

The Leafs are soon going to rebrand themselves as The Toronto No Taylors.

The last thing the Leafs need is another Bozak!

Supposedly he grew up a big Leafs fan.  Not a huge pick-up, but to get a guy with NHL experience for a player with as little value as Devane is a decent trade.

I got to watch Beck play a lot here in Guelph, he led the team in scoring two years in a row. He hasn't exactly made the jump to the NHL, but he is a MUCH better player than Devane. A buddy of mine coached Devane in Mississauga and Vaughan...says he is nothing more than a meathead goon.

Beck played with Holland and Panik in junior so he may be able to get things going again playing alongside them.

Good trade for the Leafs!

I don't think it's an earth-shattering move, but he's 24, his underlying numbers are decent playing in tough minutes, and I thought Devane was pretty much worth a 7th round pick at most.

What I like about all this (not including the Kessel trade and we know why that one was made), is that the Leafs continually trade up the talent they have. Taylor Beck is like a BMW compared to Devane's Volkswagon Bus.

13th forward maybe...that they're grabbing guys like this is consistent with the message that they're leaving the prospects down in the A.  Maybe Bailey and Hyman are indeed pegged for the A.

Yeah I don't expect much out of Beck, but it is somewhat impressive to get a depth NHLer from one of last years top teams in the league for somebody who might not have even been a top-12 forward on the Marlies this coming season.

Yeah. Getting him for basically nothing is great. There's little to no downside to this move. It's sort of a similar situation to Marincin. If he doesn't work out, the Leafs don't qualify him at the end of the season and walk away not having lost anything of value. If he shows a little more than he has with the Preds, they can keep him around for a few years as a quality depth piece and then trade him when an internal option to replace him is developed. He's not likely to be a long-term part of the team, but, in the short-term, it's a worthwhile gamble.

Agreed. However, to me what's more important is the continued message that

skill = good
goonery = bad

This.  Originally I looked at Devane  as a guy who could fill in for Orr/McLaren once they were done, but now I see a guy who will likely never play another NHL game.  At least Beck can play for the Leafs, or be a solid call-up in case of injury.

I'm curious, has anyone noted how many of these short-terms signings/trades are guys from the GTA?  It seems like quite a few grew up in the area, cheering for the Leafs.

Winnik, Matthias, Beck and Hyman are all from the GTA. Spaling, Parenteau, Arcobello, Marincin and Hunwick aren't.

Considering the number of GTA players in the league it's tough to see that as anything other than a coincidence right now.
