This looks like a shrewd cap move to me.  They just freed up $4.5 million worth of cap space.

How do you get to 4.5?

Cap Hit: $4,500,000

Yeah, but his full cap hit only gets wiped if he's claimed. If he's in the AHL they only save 950k on his cap hit but most of that is eaten by whoever replaces him.
Ugh.  Are you sure about that?  That doesn't seem fair to me at all.  He won't even be on the team.  He is going to clear waivers as well.  There is no way on earth anyone will claim him.  How many years does he have left on his deal?

The Leafs have so many albatross contracts right now.  I have never seen anything like it.  They are probably paying just as much for players who are injured or just suck as they are for the guys that they have on the active roster.  Plus they are still paying part of Kessel's salary.

I am so happy.

Edit: I think it'd be better to cut Hunwick too and keep both Brown and Leivo. That'd push Marincin back down to third pair and we can cycle Corrado and Polak as his partner.

I like that they're letting some more youth on to the big team, but I'm not sure what Hunwick or Polak did to stay up over Laich or Greening. And neither Leivo nor Brown had better camps than Carrick or Corrado. The commitment to experience and veteran leadership is lingering in the exactly the part of the roster with the worst, least easily sheltered players.

If you haven't been following,  these contracts we took on was so we could get draft picks or young talent like Carrick

That's an interesting point. Perhaps that's where they feel the veteran presence is most needed (we have a lot of forward vets already in Bozak, Martin, etc).

sickbeast, the CBA stipulates how much cap is recouped from burying a contract in the minors (preventing teams from just dumping mistakes down there for free).

https://www.capfriendly.com/faq#buried

Soshnikov is expected to be sent to AHL and Marner, Matthews, Nylander, Hyman, Brown, Carrick, Leivo, Corrado made it.

This will be fun to watch...

Not being able to bury contracts in the minors was one of the major issues in the last lockout so, yeah, you can't just waive bad contracts and get them off the cap any more.

The good news is he's only got one year left on his deal and, really, the fact that his deal is bad is the only reason he's on the team in the first place. The Leafs got a 2nd round pick(which became Carl Grundstrom) and Connor Carrick in exchange for taking on Laich's deal so it's not really a bad thing. Especially because they had cap space to spare.

I haven't seen this confirmed yet...do you have a source for that?

Not Official yet, however with Greening and Laich waived (Brown, Carrick and Corrado needs to clear (And they won't), Leivo also needs Waiver and he might clear) Soshnikov can be send back to AHL without Waivers (and Babs told that he will start in the AHL due to the injury he had in camp).

So without a blindside move by Management (like sending Marner back to junior, or not releasing Prust from his PTO) this is the lineup that is left at camp...

I'm pretty thrilled based on the players waived (assuming they actually get sent to the minors).  This is going to be a very young team and the guys who should be on the roster look like they are going to get that opportunity.

Not that it matters, but FYI, Browns is still waiver exempt. He made it 'cause he earned it despite that fact.

Forward lines at practice today:

Michalek-Kadri-Komarov
JVR-Bozak-Marner
Hyman-Matthews-Nylander
Martin-Holland-Brown

I'd have loved an offensive winger to play with Kadri, but I'm very happy with the way that looks otherwise. Maybe Sosh gets tried there once he gets up to speed.

edit: and the D pairs are what we expected:

Marincin-Rielly
Hunwick-Zaitsev
Gardiner-Carrick
Corrado-Polak

Give Zaitsev a month or two to adjust to the NHL, bump him up to the Rielly pairing, sit coach-Hunwick and play Corrado with Marincin to give Babcock 3 lefties and 3 righties.

I know he's a long ways removed from it and him regaining any of it is a long shot but I'm cautiously optimistic about Michalek in the role of an "offensive" winger. 5 time 20 goal scorer, 2 times with 60+ points...you never know.

Good to know that Brown dosen't need waivers.

Laich is still practicing with the group (the other 3 waived yesterday aren't) Prust still at practice also, and should be (at least IMHO) released from his PTO.

Campbell, Froese, Greening and Soshnikov assigned to the Marlies.

2 cuts to go.

Laich reaming with the team
Prust still on his PTO

In other news, P.A. Parenteau on waivers (Isles)

Some news from Lou-Lam:

Mark Masters ‏@markhmasters 6 minutes ago
Lamoriello says a couple Leafs are nursing injuries ... Laich could step in if someone can't play on Wed in Ottawa

Mark Masters ‏@markhmasters  8 minutes ago
Lamoriello says Prust won't be on opening night roster, but will continue practising with the team

So Laich hasn't officially been reassigned yet, but the Leafs have 30 days to do so before he would need to clear waivers again.

The news about Prust is both good and bad. He hasn't been signed to a contract but as someone pointed out on twitter Lou has done the whole "keep a vet around after their PTO expires and sign them later" thing a few times in the past. Scott Gomez in 2014-15, Adam Mair in 2010-11, and Tommy Albelin in 2005-06. Hopefully history doesn't repeat.

Lou also said Prust will not be signed by opening day but has agreed to stay on and practice w/ team. Can't travel, but great guy in room.

Lamoriello "extremely impressed" with Marner's progress over last year; "He's not on a (9-game) tryout. At this point he's made the team."

So, that leaves the Leafs with a 24 men roster. Tomorrow by 5pm there will be somenone on the IR list or Laich is sent down.

Oddly enough, with Robidas, Lupul and Horton on IR and Greening buried, both CapFriendly and GeneralFanager have them down to a 23 man roster, given that IR doesn't count toward active roster.
