Leafs vs. the Media

My OHL rink also does "chuck a puck" or a teddy bear toss on certain nights.  But you'd still get in trouble for throwing your jersey on the ice during the game.  It's not hard to understand there are certain things arenas allow and things they don't.

It's the slippery slope argument - so you can throw hats on the ice after a hat-trick, that means I can throw my jersey, I guess I'm allowed to throw my food on the ice....

There's also a reason why, when stuff starts getting thrown on the ice, there's almost always an announcement in the building that continuing to do so will result in a penalty for the home team. During play, it's obviously dangerous, and, even outside of play, anything that's smaller or can impact the quality of ice or anything like that is equally dangerous. It's also just straight up stupid.

I don't know why this thread made me think of this.

The media has gotten pretty bad as time has gone on. With all the talk shows, pre-game & post-game drivel by panels filled with blowhards, there is so much garbage out there. Does that absolve the disastrous decade this team has had? Not at all.

I think this is a big part of the problem. Everyone and their mothers are "hockey insiders" now. These idiots are in such a rush to be the first to report on earth-shattering news like Korbinian Holzer being dealt that human decency goes out the window! The next thing you know they are airing tweets on national t.v. about Lupul banging Phaneuf's wife because they aren't journalists but a bunch of amateurs who don't proof-read and fact check!  ::)

Lawsuit is a joke, the fact that the players are reacting will only encourage the trolls.

Defamation of character/libel is a joke? Because, that's absolutely what the tweet that TSN broadcast was.

the Star link
?Throwing hats onto the ice after a hat trick is an accepted tradition across the league,? Haggith (spokesperson for Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment) said in an email. ?Security and game operations staff are prepared on such occasions, minimizing safety and game interruption issues.?

This is too good not to share.

And thus ends the career of every hockey media personality who has not played professional hockey.

Agreed. TSN was embarrassed and apologized on air and on their site, etc.

Sharp of the Blackhawks recently threatened to get a lawyer over something similar

Did anyone for the leafs doing something similar when McCabe was made a scapegoat?  I sure don't remember it and McCabe was run out of town.  I don't think this is about the criticism over the years and more about the infidelity tweet.

On the ice type stuff is one thing but this was over the top, very disparaging, potentially causing problems with folks they work with, their reputations and/or their family (in Sharp's case). Not cool.

I don't think the lawsuit is a joke because I think it speaks to something that is genuinely wrong with the media today beyond whatever hurt feelings the players might have generally. TSN flashes a ton of information during their deadline show and there is an expectation that there's enough editorial control that what they put on their broadcast has some semblance of legitimacy to it. This lawsuit will hopefully knock the idea out of TSN's mind that just putting up tweets on their screens from random idiots is a good idea or, at least, get them to actually exert some editorial control on it rather than what they probably did and leave the choosing of tweets to some intern or junior producer. They need to do their job better and this lawsuit, and whatever might damages might come from it, should be their inspiration for it.

Honestly, the Cuthbert stuff specifically is bordering on ridiculous. Think of the various ways now she's had people saying disgusting stuff about her in the media for the great crime of dating and then marrying a hockey player. Whatever frustrations people might have with Phaneuf and his play it is reprehensible to drag someone's family into it and these ugly misogynistic jokes aren't funny, they're not clever and as hockey fans,  or just people, we should expect better from each other.

Not that this makes much difference, but apparently it was an automated process based particular hashtags (e.g. #tradecentre)

Did they confirm that? That might be dumber than a moderator watching the feed and actually allowing the tweet to go in.

Yeah, I can't believe that. I have to assume that a major national network would have some control over every single thing that went on their air. I mean, if I'd added #tradecentre to a tweet that was full of racial hatred I'm guessing they would have been filtering that out.

Inge Hammerstrom!  Talented, hard worker, and never fought back no matter how many times a Bully Flyer would swath him on the back with the stick.

The Leafs of the past had to put up with a lot of distractions emanating from Ballard's mouth, particularly Sittler & McDonald.

In those days, the media came in the form of newspapers and radio (as well as television).
Today, not only is there these but add the internet with it's social media, enough to cause a ripple & effect unlike in any era before it.
