Why is that backhand pass attempt by Kessel being keyed on by people?  It was a pass that didn't work to JVR because he fanned on it.  It was in the offensive zone corner, not a high risk play.

Led to a pretty good chance type situation the other way, so, yeah.

Because Gleason made a poor play at the blueline.  That play is very easily not a good chance the other way.  It's like 170-some feet from the Leafs net with multiple Leafs back.  That didn't lead to the chance, Gleason's attempted pinch did.

Wait, shouldn't you be blaming Carlyle? It was weak and a goal resulted, I don't blame him for the goal directly but he certainly could have done better, not unlucky on his part.

I don't consider fanning on a pass to be weak.  He tried a pass and it didn't work, doesn't make me feel any better about the goal to call him lazy or weak because it didn't work out.

Because the way he executed the pass made fanning on it a virtual certainty. Backhand slap-shots/passes through a crowd are not a recipe for success.

Hope_Smoke: Another bad first period for Carlyle?s Leafs. Have only had the lead after one period in 17 of 70 games this season.

Recall poor starts being one of the big criticisms of Wilson too.

Yeah. It was. That and issues on the PK (since last season really looks like an anomaly right now) seem to be the real carry-overs.

Clarkson has 2 points in his last 20 games.  2.

I was going to take a swig very time he falls, loses the puck or screws up in his own end but my liver said "don't even think about it"

Just tuning in. Man, that Gleason talk from when he first started with the team really dialed down. He hasn't been awful or anything, but he's still grossly overpaid for what he brings. And I still think Liles is the better defenceman, but he wasn't going to get played anyway.

Amazing thing is that you can search his name on Google news and not a single article criticizing him (that I found on a quick peruse).  Wonder how many other Leafs would get the same kid glove treatment from the media if they were playing this poorly?

Somewhere Bryan McCabe and Larry Murphy nod their heads knowingly.

The most criticism you really see of him is that "he's trying too hard to live up to the contract" or that the suspensions/injuries have thrown his entire season off the rails. He's definitely getting a free pass on the season in the media for the most part. I mean, everyone is saying the Leafs need more from him, but, they're also making plenty excuses for him.
