Lightning vs. Maple Leafs - Apr. 11th, 7:00pm - TSN4, TSN 1050

I have to say, Shanahan and Dubas are helming a first-class org in terms of off-ice stuff.

Woll was great. Knies, impressive. All of this talk about rotating him in or out with Lafferty or ZAR. I don't know why you would when that line had been playing so well. I think I'd sooner leave that combination alone and try him in place of Kerfoot

Coach Cooper tried to downplay the game - he was dismissive - said it had no intensity  - like an exhibition game

Then I watched this post game interview

Nick Paul was asked about every check being finished and if the teams were trying to send each other a message. He said it was like playoff hockey (roughly paraphrased)
They were hitting. 48 shots. Two fights. All their top players playing.
That was not an exhibition game.
The Lightening wanted to send a message which they did. They're not going to be easy.
The Leafs, missing key players, sent one back.

Every time I see a ref talk to media about how they don't like being embarrassed...
Up until this point, they actually called a reasonable game.

I have a real disesteem for Cooper. I used to think he was a good coach but the last few playoffs I?ve completely  changed my mind about him. The Leafs need to beat them this year just to wipe away that smug look on his face.

I think that was damage control there given all the talk about how the league feels about load management going on before the playoffs.

If Murray is healthy, returns, and backs up, there's still no chance Woll is going back to the Marlies anymore. He'll stay with the Leafs through their entire playoff run even if he's #3.

I'm not sure about that. It's not like it's difficult for the Leafs to get Woll to wherever they are in a hurry, and the organization also wants the Marlies to have success. I think he goes back to the Marlies with the understanding he could be called back up at any time.

Dubas traded away a few of the Marlies top forwards (Anderson, Gaudette, Hunt). McMann injured his knee. That has really hurt the Marlies offence. Zohorna came in but has been with the Leafs some. They were a top team in the AHL and now are struggling (1-6-2-1 in their last 10). Take Woll away (who has only played one Marlies game in April) ... that will probably kill their playoffs.

If Samsonov is iffy - sounds like he's been nursing something for a while, Murray seems too iffy to be relied upon so I can also see them maybe hanging on to Woll. I think Woll has outplayed Murray.

Could be a tough decision. I can see both sides. How serious the injuries are, which we won't know until after the playoffs, will probably decide it. We're lucky to have an option like Woll.

I'm thinking Woll is now 2nd on the depth chart. Or at least equivalent to Murray.
If all are healthy, Woll is on the Marlies.

Why would they keep him here to sit in the press box when he can be playing meaningful playoff games for the Marlies?

Murray has been injured during the pre-game skate this year already.  He's not reliable health wise and while Samsonov isn't likely to get pulled from a game where it would matter, the last thing the Leafs can afford is to have an ATO as the backup in a close game because Perry runs into him.

Yeah. I mean I'll take the even incredibly slim chance of the Leafs needing to rely on Woll to win 1 playoff game in those types of circumstances over having him try to carry the Marlies on a Calder run. Although if it's not Woll up I'm sure Kallgren would get the call instead. Regardless they'll have a 3rd NHL-signed goalie with them throughout playoffs.

I also just think it'll be good for him to be with the team going forward, especially since it's looking more and more likely he'll be here full time next season.

And I mean at the end of the day maybe Murray's not ready and Sammy craps the bed. Dubas is going to do whatever it takes to keep his job.

I think the reasoning is simple: if Woll is your second- or third-best goaltender, you can't risk him getting hurt playing in a Marlies game.  Let K?llgren carry that load.

Yeah. The fact that Woll himself has a bit of a shaky injury history as well as Murray plays into it too.

So they reach the 3rd round (one can dream ...) and Samsonov & Murray are/get hurt.
Woll hasn't played in 4-6 weeks? ...
As a 3rd stringer in the NHL, what practice is he getting?

He's going to have to get some games and decent practice to stay sharp.

I get the concern. If all 3 of these goalies get hurt, Dubas probably needs to get his resume in order. But I think there are some practical limitations.

Yeah. I want Woll playing and staying in game shape. Having 3 goalies around is a good idea - but, the 3rd goalie should basically be a guy who you have riding the pine if one of the other guys gets hurt. To me, that's Kallgren, not Woll.

I get the rusty angle but I think the risk of injury in a Marlies game outweighs it.  No way to suss it out definitively, I acknowledge.

Probably a way to find a balance between not playing and playing.  The Marlies finish the season on April 15th/16th with games at home in Toronto.  They could send Woll down to play a game or two there.

The Marlies have clinched a division title already so they will play the winner of the 4/5 play in when they are done their best of 3.  So presumably the Marlies wouldn't play a game until likely Game 3 of the Leafs series.
