Jean Michael Liles also on waivers in TOR.

I liked Jean!  ;D

EDIT:

TOR puts Korbinian Holzer and T.J. Brennan on waivers.

That makes sense, Rielly has been excellent in the preseason so I can see why they would want to give him some real NHL experience.

Probably no chance that Liles gets picked up on waivers, but if he was, would the Leafs be stuck with half of his cap hit?

This also means that Carter Ashton made the team (replacing suspended Clarkson on the third line) and Jamie Davane replacing injured Frazer McLaren on the fourth line. Rielly is 7th D-man.

No objection there, these guys were best during the camp and preseason.

No - that was re-entry waivers - not part of new CBA.

I really hope this is only for Rielly's 9 game stint (and I really hope Rielly only gets a 9 game stint, but that explanation is in a bunch of other threads). Liles likely has to get traded this season, and if he isn't the team will buy him out next offseason when the window opens. I really hate wasting cap space like that. And the only way to trade Liles is to play him and give him a chance to show he can still be a NHL defender.

There's only enough cap space for Ashton right now, as you can see above. Assuming McLaren isn't ready to start the season and isn't placed on LTIR, the team will have to open the season with just 11 forwards. After the first game if the situation hasn't changed, they'll be able to use an emergency recall on Bodie to bring them up to 12.

Do the leafs have the worst cap management in the entire league?  They are looking at 5.5 million in dead space.  Is there any other team in the league (aside from maybe the Islanders if Yashin is still on the books) with even 1 million in dead space?

<insert repetitive comment on grabbo buyout vs. Liles buyout here>

I still think the prudent move would have been to use the 2 day buyout window to buy Liles out then, after they signed Fraser. IMO, it would have been a good gamble, considering how many defensemen are currently in our system.

Sure, it would have been a little extra against the cap in year 3 of the buyout, but we wouldn't have to be compromising on roster size right now and more options would have been available.

Carolina, Buffalo, Columbus, Florida, Minnesota, New Jersey, NY Islanders, and  Tampa Bay have over 1M in dead cap space.

And there very well might not be a single playoff team in that group.

Yup, you are right

James Mirtle @mirtle

Leafs have now sent down D'Amigo, Devane, MacWilliam and Leivo as well. Final roster will include Ashton and Rielly, barring something odd.

One or both of MacIntyre and Brennan could possibly get picked up on waivers IMO.

MacIntyre? Not a chance. Go through the teams in the league and find one without a better back-up right now. Brennan? Maybe, but there's been a few defencemen like him waived in the past few days that haven't been claimed.

Cmon Burke don't let me down and claim Liles in Calgary!
