Liles on Waivers

One or both of MacIntyre and Brennan could possibly get picked up on waivers IMO.

MacIntyre? Not a chance. Go through the teams in the league and find one without a better back-up right now. Brennan? Maybe, but there's been a few defencemen like him waived in the past few days that haven't been claimed.

Keep Macintyre.  In case they should ever need him, he's a decent back-up.

After the first game if the situation hasn't changed, they'll be able to use an emergency recall on Bodie to bring them up to 12.

No, they won't. They'll still be able to dress 18 skaters under the cap, and, therefore, won't be eligible for an emergency call up. The CBA doesn't distinguish between forwards and defencemen in these situations.

Like, keep him on the teams roster?

Good point. I didn't even think about that. I wonder if they move a Fraser or Ranger up to the 4th line for a few shifts or double-shift a forward.

Are the Leafs starting the season with 11 forwards and 7 D-men?

At this point, it appears that way for game one at least.

Is there a minimum roster allowed?

The minimum is 18 skaters and 2 goalies. You can go below that though in case of emergencies like injuries or suspensions.

Well, considering the hole is on the 4th line that gets 4-6 minutes a night, my guess is they'll run out whoever seems to be playing well that night to cover those shifts until McLaren's hand is fit to punch with again.

They're playing the tiny Habs first. Just double shift Kessel or Kadri so one or both of them can rack up 4-5 points on Tuesday.

Probably. Can you waive an injured player? I know it'd be unlikely, but if he was waived for another face puncher like Bodie, Devane, or Broll, would that really have hurt the team even in Carlyle's eyes?

You can't demote injured players (at least, not if they inured themselves in an NHL game/practice, like McLaren did).

And, for what it's worth, Broll isn't really a big time fighter, either. Since being drafted, he's fought 19 times in regular season or playoff games. He can fight, but he's more of a Komarov-type that's willing to drop the gloves than a pure face puncher.

Yeah, I kinda figured that.

I have only seen a bit of Devane but I wonder if he could replace McLaren (and do a better job of the hockey part).

Sure but didn't the players they used the buyouts on (Komi and Grabs) have even bigger cap hits? Not sure how a regular buyout of Komi would have worked though, could probably have been lower than Liles hit and only for two years? Yeah it would be 'dead space' but the almost 3M left with Liles in the minors is pretty dead too. Unless there is some gotcha I'm missing the only thing I can figure is they really wanted to trade out of one of these messes and Liles had the best chance.

Busta seems to know all the CBA stuff, but my understanding is that the cap clearingest move would've been to compliance buyout Grabo and Liles for $5.5m + 3.85m, and then regular buyout the last year of Komi's contract, which turns his $4.5m cap hit for the 2013-14 season into a $1.5m cap hit for the next two. That seems to clear about $12.4m in cap space, instead of the $10m that the Grabo & Komi buyouts did. On the other hand, I've not had much luck figuring out cap savings today -- so who knows?

But what's the deal with Liles? Will the $2.95m hit remain on the cap for next 3 seasons that he's under contract and buried?

I doubt they'd have to keep him buried for three years though. When the cap goes up, they may have some room to trade him while retaining some cap/salary.

Depends on what they have to do for new contracts though (Kessel, Franson, Kulemin, etc.)

Wow another ex Avalanche defenceman  goes bust , Finger and now Liles . Nonis, note to self ,3rd time is the charm :)
