Marlies Playoff Thread 2013

It's great for the Marlies to be going forward.  Eakins seems like a master with how he rolls with the punches when losing players to the Leafs. It would be amazing to go for a long playoff run with all the players coming back. Colborne and Gardiner must be so hungry, neither is going to get to play but to experience that intensity is enough.  Hopefully the return players help the current bunch to go deep.  Who could return?

The transaction wire on the AHL website is showing MacIntyre has been called up. Hopefully, this is just to get some more practice time while waiting for Round 2 to start.

markhmasters: RT @LeafsPR Ben Scrivens is expected back in Boston on Saturday. Attending a funeral out of town Friday.

markhmasters: Per @LeafsPR - Drew MacIntyre will be at practice today on an emergency recall

I did not see that earlier about Scrivens. Easy move to make with the Marlies layoff.

In terms of a 2nd round opponent, they still have to wait for a bit. Grand Rapids(#3) - Houston (#6) and Charlotte (#4) - Oklahoma City (#5) are both going to a 5th game. Both games are on saturday night. The only team they won't face from this list is Houston as #1 seed Texas Stars have also advanced to Round 2.

I think it's amazing that the Marlies made the playoffs at all, considering how much of their team is sitting in the Leafs' pressbox.

I believe the big part of the Marlies success is the system Dallas Eakins teaches his players. They are not just buying it but they follow it strictly and although his players are less skillful the adherence to the system works wonders. Eakins seems to be a great motivator and I believe he has a tremendous ability to detect his players abilities and strenghts and he is not afraid to adjust the rotation of the lines to maximize the effect. The best example is Gregg Scott and Jerry D?Amigo combo. They thrive in the playoffs and their role is completely different compared to regular season, in which both players were quite invisible. Kudos to Eakins.
All that said he is, however, lucky to have a hot goalie always available, should it be Reimer 2 years ago, Scrivens last year ar McIntyre this year.

They use Carlyle's system so that when the players get called up, it's familiar to them and they can be assessed in the AHL playing that system.

Before that, he used Wilson's system for the same reasons.

How come they don't get horrifically outshot every game then?

They did in Game #1.

Grand Rapids blanked Houston 7-0 and OKC defeated Charlotte 6-2 today. That sets up Toronto-Grand Rapids as the Western Conference semi-final.

Schedule is now out for the Western Conference semis. If this goes 6 or 7, I might actually get to a game.

Western Conference Semifinal ? Series ?L? (best-of-7)
2-Toronto Marlies vs. 3-Grand Rapids Griffins
Game 1 ? Fri., May 10 ? Grand Rapids at Toronto, 7:00
Game 2 ? Sat., May 11 ? Grand Rapids at Toronto, 3:00
Game 3 ? Wed., May 15 ? Toronto at Grand Rapids, 7:00
Game 4 ? Fri., May 17 ? Toronto at Grand Rapids, 7:00
*Game 5 ? Sat., May 18 ? Toronto at Grand Rapids, 7:00
*Game 6 ? Tue., May 21 ? Grand Rapids at Toronto, 7:00
*Game 7 ? Wed., May 22 ? Grand Rapids at Toronto, 7:00

If the Leafs lose on Friday, can Colbourne, Hamilton, Frattin and Gardiner rejoin the Marlies for the rest of the AHL playoffs??

I don't think Gardiner can.

That's a good question - the AHL changed the clear day roster rules this year, did they not.

I guess the main issue is, Frattin and Gardiner were with the big club at the deadline, while Colborne and Hamilton were not.

They did change the rules. Here is the one reference I could find. In previous years, the Clear day lists were published by the league. This year, the actual lists were not published that I could find.

"In addition, the AHL?s playoff roster deadline is Monday, Apr. 22, at 3 p.m. ET, by which time all 16 playoff teams must submit to the league a list of playoff-eligible players. Only those players on a team?s playoff eligibility list, plus signed draft choices and players signed to amateur tryout contracts, are eligible to compete in the Calder Cup Playoffs. Players from lower professional leagues can also be added if they played in at least eight games in the AHL and/or a lower league in 2012-13. "

I know the Leafs send down Hamilton at the trade deadline so he'd be eligible for the Marlies playoff run, and then they immediately recalled him.
