Marner signs 6 year, $10.893mil AAV contract

Johnston's quote in the second PPP article hits the nail on the head.  Keefe ought to be getting almost as much vitriol as Marner.

I have the most criticism for Keefe. Several questionable decisions and let's face it, probably his biggest was inserting Sandin into the lineup and unfortunately that didn't work out very well at at all.

Inserting Foligno coming off injury into the second line centre spot in place of Kerfoot when that line was the team's best line in the series, not a great decision.

Yeah, the Foligno thing was a bad call.

I've only just caught up on extended highlights of the games on the latest west coast swing.

Once again I come away thinking the Leafs would be making one of the biggest mistakes in franchise history not to find a way to retaining Marner.

I think they've already made a huge mistake not having it sorted by now.

(Unless he's replaced by McDavid next summer)

By his 3rd season in Toronto, he led the Leafs forwards in time on ice in the regular season and playoffs.
Three Leafs coaches came to that similar conclusion.
I think Leafs management have handled it poorly - playing stupid games with the media while the player is holding all the cards. One way or the other, it is going to cost them.

At $10.93 per coming out of his ELC, it already cost them and will always have cost them regardless unless management caves to every perceived slight Marner has ever had.

Kucherov at almost a million and a half less, being the better player. I take that all day long.

Sounds great in theory. But you have to ignore the context to go along with that.
He was an injury risk. He wound up missing an entire season with a hip problem shortly after signing the deal.

If Kucherov was available at that time. And wanted to sign in Toronto. At the same price as what he signed for in Tampa. Sure, I'd take it too.

Marner is going to be Marner.

It's up to management and ownership to architect a Cup winner within the cap space alloted. It's management and ownership that has failed for 10 years in this era, and for 57 years in total.

Any issues with Marners contract, or his lack of fortitude, or wins/losses, or whether the franchise will get any value for him if they cannot come to a deal is totally on ownership and Management. Marner is going to be Marner.

But my opinion is that solid ownership and management would have signed his last deal at the $9m+ mark, with a NMC in the last season, and traded him (or one of the other Core4) the summer of 2021.

Instead we Groundhog Dayed like a slow mo car crash.... an All or Nothing Amazon Series looped for 8 years and probably will be looped for another 4 to 8 years based on past performance of management and ownership of this franchise.

But his agent wouldn't have gone for that. "We'll take UFA at age 25 or so, thanks" So the Leafs get to flip him at the end of his 7th season to a contender for a low 1st or so because he's a rental. Or flip him at age 24 to try to get more. But they'll never get his talent value back. Never. And he won't have hit his peak as a Leaf.

Contracts involve two parties coming to an agreement - not one. The price for getting two of his UFA years was a NMC for each year for a 1.15ppg player who is very good defensively and their top playoff scorer. A player all three of their NHL coaches thought deserved the most ice time among the forwards.

Marner was handily their leading scorer against the Lightning in the playoff series they won.

If Marner wasn't playing for them this season, they'd be probably fighting for a playoff spot. What UFA would have replaced him? No one as good. And it is convenient to forget when comparing salaries the taxes Marner pays compared with a lot of US destinations.
