Matthews signs 5 year contract, $11.634mil AAV

FYI

Cap Friendly shows his contract at 11.630 and not 11.634 as is being reported. I reached out to Cap Friendly and they responded quickly to say that they show 11.630 based on what they know so far, but they are working on getting all the details and will update their site once they have it all.

As an aside, I do not like the cap system, but Cap Friendly makes it a whole lot easier to be a fan!

It's got to be 11.634 because Dubas even commented on the number in an interview.

Huh, that's a little weird. Even the full contract details that McKenzie tweeted out add to $58.15mil total or $11.63mil averaged. Just never noticed. Wonder where that extra $20k is coming from. Guessing the Leafs just sprinkled it in somewhere and it didn't make it into Bob's reporting of the numbers:

It's probably just a result rounding numbers for the tweet.

There's also a significant difference between "has been injured" and "is injury prone".

I agree. But in Matthews's case, given his injuries in the minors and at the NHL level, I tend to think "injury prone" is the more appropriate descriptor.

That could change if he manages to stay healthy for a whole season (or even the rest of this season).

He has managed that.

Also, I'm not sure I see the pattern of injury in the minors you do.

Especially since - as pedantic as this detail may be - he never played in the minors.

I'd imagine he's just referring to pre-draft injuries (I know he missed 2 weeks with a back injury in his draft year, not sure if there were any others).

He missed a couple weeks in Switzerland and broke his leg when he was 16.

I was sorta keeping track of this and it's a little weird that most of the people pushing the "Matthews is injury prone" stuff are also the ones upset he didn't sign for 8 years. That seems odd.

It's just their valuation of Matthews: sub-generational (not even the best on the Leafs, apparently), hence the disdain for the price the Leafs agreed to pay. 8 years at this 11+M price is probably okay for them and I assume they'd be pretty okay with 5yrs @ 8-9M AAV.

Like if this contract was doled out to Nylander/Marner, I'd be a bit sour. But it's Matthews, and for me, it's within the range of acceptable.

I think Nylander is underpaid btw, so everyone is free to roast that take. He fought for near-market value, but his ceiling is higher than that in my valuation, and the contract he took is probably the steal that lets us keep most of the core band together.

I agree with you on Nylander, that contract is going to prove to be a steal of a deal.  Matthews at 5 years makes perfect sense.  Great article by Mirtle on the changing face of hockey deals and how like baseball the big money, long term contracts are going to go away for anyone in the late 20's, cause the truth is guys are already on the downward curve after 27-28 except for some major exceptions. All these bloated contracts to guys like Marleau will disappear, these guy will be available for next to nothing as things unfold as Mirtle point outs.  The game is no speed speed speed and if you can't keep up, your toast

True. I knew he had been fine in his rookie year but somehow forget when I was responding.

I guess I'm mostly referring to the fact that he has gotten injured a number of times on relatively innocent looking plays in his young career. It's probably bad luck, but it's a bit weird.

I have to say, I?m very disappointed in a lot of you. This is why we, as a fan base are so often mocked.

The team locked up, a centre, that is no worse than the 5th best player in the league and we?re complaining about how much and how long he signed for and we?re having mock drafts of other players in the league.

For f?s sake enjoy the good times. This won?t last forever. Seriously get your heads out of your asses people.

Well done. I think some "fans" would find the negative if the Leafs won the cup ffs. Enjoy the ride people.

Exactly!

I would like to just remind everyone that this kid is going to get 30M/yr to play a game he loves. The JT contract is similar. I'm happy, hoping for a Marner deal soon.

I don't think there is any harm in being critical of this deal and voicing our opinions.  Most of us Leaf fans have been fans through decades of inept management so it is hard to be trusting of even the current GM and management team.

Am I happy that our team is playing well and we have our superstar locked up for 5 years? Of course I am, but getting him signed was inevitable and I think they overpaid and under-termed on it just as I feel they overpaid Nylander.

It seems like we waited for so long for this franchise to finally have a promising young, up and coming core, and now they have to already consider maybe losing a guy like Kapanen because of the cap crunch situation they have gotten themselves into.
