Mayor Rob Ford

While this is a flat out embarrassment for the city, a part of me feels for the guy on a personal level.  He's obviously battling some inner demons and this has a tragic/sad ending written all over it.

mikeminer: What? "Judge links mayor Rob Ford to jailhouse beating""savagely beaten in jail bc he was a 'bother' to the mayor"  http://t.co/jPwlSG12Jd

I don't support anyone who refuses to work and still collects a pay cheque.

A councilor who refused to vote for any of the Mayor's agenda isn't tantamount to someone who "refuses to work" mainly because most of a councilor's job isn't just voting on policy. Serving on committees, constituent services...most of a councilor's job has nothing to do what positions they take in relation to the Mayor. Hell, a proactive one could work even harder by trying to advance a competing agenda.

He just needs to wake up and realize that stepping down is the only option left for him now.....

Mayor Rob Ford has lost his talk radio pulpit. Newstalk 1010 announced that Ford's radio show has been cancelled ow.ly/qDjxt

Another win for the city of Toronto. Rob Ford was the topic of David Letterman's Top Ten list last night:

Well I would disagree just a little bit with this philosophy.  I don't ascribe to very much of Ford's agenda to begin with, but good policy should be backed regardless of the fool who is promoting it.

If Ford was to propose something that benefits the city and someone votes against it simply because Ford brought it up, well, that's what the Republicans do in the States.  Good policy should be supported.  Ford probably shouldn't still be in office, but until he is removed good things should still move forward.  Less time being spent on yelling about how much of a boob Rob Ford is and more time spent on trying to make the city better is what should be going on.

As for that article about the prison beating.  That seems like a pretty skimpy assertion to make without any actual evidence.  The guy sounds exactly the type to run his mouth in prison when amongst guys much larger and tougher than him.

That's fair enough in the abstract where policy can be thought of in absolutes like good or bad but realistically any municipal policy is going to be a trade-off and going to rely on common belief and shared outlook. Try as I might, I don't think I could fault anyone for taking a deep, hard look at themselves if their thoughts on municipal policy aligned with Rob Ford's right now.

This is off-topic but I don't think that's true either. I would agree that Republicans have become more obstinate during the Obama administration and that they've refused to collaborate with the President but I don't think that anyone in the Republican party is voting against anything for anything other than ideological reasons. You can ascribe whatever motives to the shift you like but it is that party's hard swing right that's driving that stance.

Now in response to a question from a counsellor he's admitted to purchasing illegal drugs within the last 2 years.

So, he's openly admitting he committed a criminal offence? Lovely.

Because we discussed this the other day, I had read in the National Post that the only way the province can intervene to move to oust Ford is when he is convicted of a criminal offense.

I don't think admitting to one would qualify, but you've got to think that he'd man up and resign given these admissions of guilt.

You're right. It doesn't qualify. Heck, it's not even enough for the police to charge him. As for stepping down/resigning - yeah, a reasonable person would do so under these circumstances, but, Rob Ford is not a reasonable person.

Doug Ford has caused two recesses this meeting so far getting into it with Minnan-Wong...this is a circus...

It's almost like the Fords don't realize that Rob taking a leave of absence would be better for his political career than fighting things out this way and keeping this dysfunctional story in the headlines. The longer this goes on, the less and less the public is going to forget about it when it comes to the upcoming election.

No, wait, it's exactly that - they absolutely do not realize this.

One of the reasons he should step down is to avoid turning into a complete joke:

Too late.

Two things that watching the council debate today has reinforced for me:

1) Raymond Cho is awesome.  It might be because his English isn't the greatest, but he's so concise and straightforward, and he has a great sense of humor.

2) Mammoliti is even more of a circus sideshow than Ford is - and he originally was running in the same election as Ford.  Imagine if he somehow was elected mayor!!

CBC's reporting Rob Ford used city staffers to buy vodka for him, change lightbulbs at his house, and change batteries in children's toys

What's sadder? The misuse of power or the fact he can't change a light bulb?
