Disregarding the blather about "enterprise journalism" (WTF) this makes sense.  Nobody reads the NYT to find out how the Mets did last night.  They can still cover sports-related stuff whenever they deign to notice.

For the record, this is 100% not true. The Times has a long and distinguished history of covering New York sports and it 100% was read by New Yorkers for that reason. My father, a native New Yorker, always had it as his sports section of choice to the point that he subscribed despite not having lived in New York for years.

I stand corrected.  Though if I had written "Today nobody reads" etc. I would have been close to the truth.

I mean, he's still alive but sure. That said a lot of local papers have lost daily sports readership over the last 20+ years. I used to read the Star everyday and probably haven't read an article there in years either. My point was more that the NYT, as much as any paper, has a long and distinguished history of sports beat coverage.

I agree with that for sure, and some of it is (ironically) noted in the NYT article today announcing the decision.

And I certainly didn't mean to insult your father!  I wish him many years of happiness ahead (even if he's a Ranger fan).

I went to cancel a couple of months back and they suckered me in with a deal for a year's membership for not very much.

I imagine the Leafs coverage will continue to be decent, and also the Newcastle United content, but I enjoyed stumbling across random stuff about other clubs but I can see that kind of thing suffer if they've fewer dedicated writers.

I think it's telling that I didn't want to pay full price for it any more, though.

So still on TSN for broadcast, and still on SDPN/the CJ show for podcast, but writing is no longer through the NorthStar Bets/Tor Star network.

uhhh

He's disappeared since June 30th so a lot of people had guessed this already. I've always liked Marek, even from his pre-Sportsnet days. Thought he'd have been a great MacLean replacement there. Hopefully he moves on to something better. SN will soon not be the biggest player in the game anymore. Maybe Amazon poached him for their Monday night thing.

"Unconfirmed draft reasons", what the hell is that supposed to mean?

Was reading about Marek on Reddit and apparently he was at the Vegas draft and left before initially planned and no one knows why and he hasn't worked since.

I really hope that's all it is, and not *waves hands* all those other possibilities

You often speak somewhat cryptically and now I'm wondering what you're talking about.

I just hope this isn't a milkshake duck situation. I have no esoteric knowledge, other than the basic reasons people might get pulled off the air and into a cone of silence, for which there are generally more negative reasons than positive.

Yes, would have made a good replacement for Ron MacLean.

What are "unconfirmed draft reasons"?
