Mitch Marner: what now?

It's also worth mentioning that Draisaitl's "dominating" playoff run was scoring 9 points in 2 games and then 7 points in the other 11. Either way, it still wasn't as high a ppg as Marner in the 17-18 playoffs.

I suspect you will nitpick it until the umpteenth degree so I'll stick with my original thought. Draisaitl had proven to the Oilers in the playoffs that he could perform at center and even then might not have been worth the contract he signed.

Quite literally everyone can see what your original thought was. It was not "Draisaitl had proven he could perform at center" it was that Draisaitl's point totals and playoff run were "while playing center".

Just for once in your life try to take an obvious loss with some dignity.

Plenty of irony in this post.

Or, you know, double down while revealing you don't really get what irony is.

Last sentence if your previous post.

That was a solid attempt at writing a full sentence in English but irony isn't hypocrisy. Not even Alanis Morrissette butchered the word that badly.

Because the Leafs committed to using LTIR, it will be impossible for the Leafs to sign Marner to anything more than ~10.5M AAV deeper into the season because of the pro-rated first year cap hit exceeding our LTIR room.

Because he also has no intention of playing outside of Toronto and no one is willing to offer a mind changing amount in addition to the 4 1sts, the only thing we are waiting for is how many years Marner will sign at the close of pre-season.

I don't know if it's completely unlikely that he burns the year.

Dubas will trade him before that happens.

But sitting out the year won?t help Marner achieve any of his objectives (maximizing his salary, staying in Toronto).

Further to princedpw's note... every day Marner's camp takes this past Opening Day, his 1st year pro-rated cap hit goes up and his actual AAV goes down if he wants to sign with Toronto. His best bet to achieve his objective of staying in Toronto is to sign on the very last possible day before Opening Day that he's comfortable with. The Leafs have boxed out a heftier sum than they originally wanted to work with, so kudos to Marner's agent for driving up the price.

The only NHL player who deserves over 10M/yr is McDavid who can single-handed carry a team.  If Marner wants >10M/yr, let him sit.

McDavid makes far north of $10M as do quite a few players. Auston also.

I'm always puzzled by this sort of statement because I have absolutely no idea where the logic is. No hockey player "deserves" 10 million dollars a year if we're talking about some sort of utilitarian "contributions to public good" sense. The only way these guys deserve a fraction of what they're getting is by trying to peg their economic value in a free market. And in that sense, quite clearly, quite a few guys are worth 10 million a season and quite likely much more than that.

Also, as good as McDavid is, I don't think he's far and away the best player in the league. His value's high because of his talent and youth but if I were starting a team from scratch to win the cup next year I don't know if I'd take him over Crosby.

I take both! Top that!

Everyone's back to work (except for me haha)

I think the purpose of the bridge, for the Leafs, is to get Marner under a contract that doesn't necessitate any more ugly roster or asset-management decisions in the next few years. The QO coming out of the deal doesn't mean that much, especially since they won't be able to sign him for any less than the high-end of that last year ($14M, say) anyway, given cap inflation.
