NHL ending executive compensation policy

And, you know, I'm not even mad about it. It's just the most Leafs thing ever for this policy to just last long enough for it to cost them picks and then vanish.

If prosportstransactions.com is to be believed, he's already managed to join the Leafs without compensation. Of course, it's possible they just forgot to update their lists with the LL compensation, but . . .

Man, it sure would be something if Lou pulled a Jedi mind trick and got Jersey to waive their right to compensation.

With that said I'm pretty sure that site just doesn't have comp picks for GMs listed for some reason, as the Chiarelli hire is the only other one not listed. Dreger said that 7 picks have changed hands because of this. That would be: Lou, Babcock, Chiarelli, McLellan, Bylsma, Tortorella, and Hynes. So two teams accounted for more than half of the lost draft picks.

Two teams that have been near the bottom of the league for a while, as well. That being said, I'm not overly concerned about having lost a couple 3rd picks. They should be easy enough to replace/substitute, considering this is one of the few compensation areas where teams can negotiate to not have to transfer their own pick.
 
I don't know if this will best be covered by Friedman or maybe on something like Marek vs. Wyshinski but the story behind the NHL's complete 180 here has to be fascinating.

I thought it came out that Bettman was always against it but owners were asking for it so they did it and the belief was that Bettman allowed it because he believed the owners would come to actually not like it.  Or something like that.

A helpful article that maybe sheds some light on how this went down. Basically it sounds like there's a bit of a divide between the owners(and Gary Bettman especially) who didn't like the rule and GMs who kind of did.

This is what I thought was kind of an interesting point:

"You either give permission to negotiate, and if the two parties actually make a deal then the executive is free to go. But there is no compensation. If you don't want to give permission to somebody who is under contract, whether or not they're employed but they are being paid and still under contract, is the club's decision."

I still say that where this got messed up was the NHL's insistence, as per usual, that there could be no meaningful room for actual negotiation. They demanded a set and specific one-size fits all cost for executives and they misjudged the market place. Why teams couldn't actually negotiate compensation? Well, Gary Bettman has built his league so the slow kids don't get the sharp scissors.
